Thirty-six new graduates from Assiniboine’s mature high school

Thirty-six students from Assiniboine Community College will receive their mature high school diplomas at a ceremony this coming Saturday afternoon in Brandon.

This year’s valedictorian, Leon McKay, served on the college’s Students’ Association as the Adult Collegiate representative.

“I feel it's a big honour to graduate from the MSHS program and be chosen as this year's valedictorian. I have enjoyed my time at ACC as the Collegiate student rep,” said McKay.

Eleven students graduate with honours, meaning they have achieved a cumulative average of at least 80 per cent in their coursework.

Three entrance scholarships will be presented to graduates continuing their post-secondary education at Assiniboine. Other scholarship awards include Westman Communication’s Award of Excellence and UFCW Local 832 scholarships.

Earlier this year, the college announced two new initiatives thanks in part to the support of its Foundation. Application fees for the Mature Student High School program are being waived as part of a two-year trial period. Additionally, the Foundation directed funds from this year’s Legacy Gala Dinner to providing scholarships for MSHS graduates who are entering post-secondary programs at the college. This year’s gala raised approximately $26,000.

The graduation ceremony takes place tomorrow beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the college’s Victoria Avenue East Campus in Brandon.

Earlier this month, Assiniboine held its annual graduation ceremonies in Brandon and Dauphin with more than 1,300 graduating students receiving diplomas, certificates and completing apprenticeship levels.
