Tuition-Free ESL courses available at Assiniboine

Assiniboine Community College’s tuition-free English language training for Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) 5-8 will continue to run in the New Year, with some space still remaining for newcomers to Canada to sign up.

“We’ll continue to offer these courses in an online format for the winter term, giving students the flexibility to study from home safely given the current public health environment in Manitoba,” said Meghan Miller, Program Coordinator for ESL at Assiniboine.

The objective of the classes is to help newcomers gain further employment, move on to further education and integrate in the Westman community.

Registration is currently open for the following options in January:

  • Beginning January 11, 2021
    • Weekday morning classes, 9 to 11:30 a.m.
    • Weekday afternoon classes, 1 to 3:30 p.m.
    • Weekday evening classes, 6 to 9 p.m.
  • Beginning January 16, 2021
    • Saturday morning classes, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
    • Saturday afternoon classes, 1 to 4 p.m.

There will be more class options available starting in April. Registration for these spring classes will open March 8, 2021.

To be eligible for these classes, students must have completed CLB level 4 or higher in listening, speaking, reading and writing, and must hold permanent resident status in Canada. ESL classes at Assiniboine are part of the Pathways to Success for Newcomers program funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
