Katherine Urrutia Alvarenga will suit up for the Cougars women’s soccer team in the fall.

Urrutia is a local talent, graduating from Vincent Massey High School in 2022. She played youth soccer through to varsity as a forward for the Vincent Massey Vikings. In her graduating year, the Vikings won the city title and went on to represent Brandon at the Manitoba High School Athletic Association AAAA provincials.

“I am so excited to start a new journey and make new friendships along the way,” said Urrutia. “It will be great to have a little family in a big community.”

Born in El Salvador, Urrutia has familial and cultural ties to the game of soccer. She moved to Canada with her family when she was a toddler and soccer still provides sense of home and heart.

“Katherine is an offensive minded midfield/striker who will add punch to our offence this season,” said Cougars coach Mark Dabbs. “She has the ability to find space in behind and in between defenders and can hold the ball and wait for help if necessary.”

In high school Urrutia received three silver medals for student citizenship in academics, athletics and school citizenship and a bronze for academics and athletics. She is a part of the Misión Cristiana Emmanuel Church and when she can find the times she participates in choir and assists with Sunday School.

Urrutia’s first language is in Spanish and she is educated in English. She sees a need for social workers with a bilingual skill set and wants to work within the foster care system.

“I want to be a part of the system that helps kids find a loving and supportive home,” said Urrutia. She will be taking the colleges Social Service Worker program in the fall.
