Conservation Technician-Polar Bears

Overview

We have an opening for a Conservation Technician-Polar Bears to join the Conservation and Research team at
Assiniboine Park Zoo. This is a grant-funded position to work on a research project focused on the reproductive
phenology of polar bears and risk assessment for polar bear denning habitat. This position will involve data
gathering, GIS mapping (using ArcMap), statistical data analysis (using R), and scientific writing of manuscripts
and reports (for funders, provincial government, etc.). The Conservation Technician-Polar Bears will acquire and
compile data from previously published sources and through data-sharing agreements and collaboration with local
jurisdictions.
Responsibilities include: research, spatial and data analysis, communication of research progress and results,
scientific writing, and related duties as required. The Conservation Technician-Polar Bears will primarily work with
the Conservation and Research Department and will adhere to all health and safety regulations, legislation, and
policies.

Qualifications

-M.Sc. in biological sciences, wildlife management, or a related field and/or certificate in Geographic
Information Systems, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be
considered.
- Proven experience in data analysis and scientific writing is essential.
-Proficiency using the programs ArcGIS, R, and Microsoft Office.
-Strong attention to detail and demonstrated ability to collect and maintain data sets.
-Capacity to prepare research proposals and reports.
-Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to build and maintain positive working
relationships with diverse groups.
-Ability to work under pressure and deal with confidential and sensitive matters.
-Strong problem-solving, multitasking, and task prioritization skills.
-Ability to work effectively as part of a team with minimal supervision
-Specialized knowledge of polar bear ecology and/or fire ecology is considered an asset.
-Previous experience applying GIS and spatial analysis skills in biological-focused research is considered an
asset.
-Ability to speak and write in languages other than English is considered an asset.
-Possess a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License (or equivalent is considered an asset.
