Assiniboine Forest Coordinator

Overview

The Charleswood Rotary Club and the Friends of the Harte Trail are looking to hire individuals to assist with park maintenance projects in Assiniboine Forest and along the Harte Trail, including trail maintenance, park cleanup, invasive species removal, and planting/maintaining trees, shrubs and wildflowers.

PROJECT LOCATION: Assiniboine Forest and the Harte Trail, Winnipeg MB

PROJECT/JOB DESCRIPTION: Assiniboine Forest encompasses 287 hectares of aspen-oak forest, wetlands, and small meadows. Numerous trails run through the forest and require maintenance during the spring and summer months. The Harte Trail extends from the south end of Assiniboine Forest to the west perimeter highway in Charleswood. Annual maintenance is required in these parks including pruning, maintaining tree plantings, and invasive species removal.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• On-site supervisor of Green Team (3 other employees), responsible for record-keeping
• Maintain and build trails, spread woodchips, prune trees and shrubs
• Assist with invasive species control, debris cleanup, graffiti removal, empty garbage bins
• Assist with planting and maintenance of native trees, shrubs, grasses and wildflowers

WAGE: $14.00 per hour plus 4% vacation pay, 35-hour work week (Monday-Friday)
(Dependent on funding)

ANTICIPATED TERM: Approximate term: June - August 2022

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Enrollment in post-secondary education with specialization in Environmental Science/Studies, Biology, Ecology, Horticulture or related field
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
• Self-motivated and reliable
• Willingness to work outdoors (under adverse conditions, at times)
• Ability to communicate effectively with the public
• Interest and general knowledge of Winnipeg’s natural areas an asset
• Manitoba class 5 driver’s license and ability to operate off-road vehicles is required
