Student Assistant Curator-Tour Guide

Overview

This position for students is a full time seasonal position of 40 hr/wk from May 2, 2022 to August 31, 2022. Our Museum depicts family life during the Victorian Era in a family home that was built in 1888 and is listed as a Designated Municipal Heritage Building. Three additional Annexes were attached that hold a large Military Display, School displays, Hospital Display and an original Rural Post Office just to name a few things as well as a Coach House that displays farming artifacts and horse drawn sleighs and a Democrat Buggy plus many other items.
Some of the student duties involve creating special tours for school children of all ages as well as tours on demand for all visitors during the season; Promoting our Museum with displays at Farmers Market and other Special Downtown Events; this year we hope to create a special Museum Day or Heritage Day, a BBQ, A Kid’s Day, Special group Tours for Day Care children and Day Camp children with heritage activities to enjoy; and assist the Curator with cataloguing and displaying artifacts throughout the Museum.
This position allows the student to showcase their abilities to work as a team member with other students or independently as well as their interpersonal, organizational, problem solving skills and knowledge of the social media platforms. The ability to prioritize their time and manage multiple projects as well as an interest in Event Planning, Marketing and Public Relations or a willingness to learn would be an asset.

Qualifications

- one position is open to students currently attending College and planning to return to studies in fall
-have an interest in history or heritage, Museums and/or Archives
-the field of studies interested in: History, Archival and Museum fields, English and Journalism, Tourism and Hospitality, Public Relations, Computer Studies and Database Programming, and Business Management and Administration would all be an asset along with a willingness to learn on the job.
- must be willing to commit to 40 hrs/wk - 5 days/week from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and alternating weekends with other staff as required.
- must have a pleasing personality, be responsible, honest and trustworthy, be independent and able to work with minimal supervision and be a good team member.
- have good computer skills and a working knowledge of Word, Excel and Access would be an asset for everyday use and ongoing cataloguing procedures.
- Have good communication skills and a willingness to learn about local history and cultures.
- Have good writing skills as well as good handwriting and legibility due to the fact that a lot of handwritten paperwork is required in a normal workday.
-be able to work with all ages and nationalities
- be fluent in English. A knowledge of a second language would be an asset but not a requirement.
