Agronomy Extension Specialist – Cereal Crops

Overview

Manitoba Crop Alliance (MCA) is seeking a permanent, full-time Agronomy Extension Specialist – Cereal Crops to join our dynamic team and serve our farmer members who grow high-quality wheat and barley in the province of Manitoba.

The Agronomy Extension Specialist – Cereal Crops is responsible for the development, co-ordination and extension of wheat (spring and winter) and barley agronomic information and research results to MCA farmer members under the supervision of the chief executive officer.

This role requires a highly motivated individual with a passion for agriculture, strong communication skills and a positive, team-oriented attitude.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support MCA’s strategic plan, including its vision, mission and strategic objectives.
- Act as a liaison and build collaborative relationships with farmers, researchers, government, industry, fellow commodity organizations and other stakeholders to advance the spring wheat, winter wheat and barley industries in Manitoba.
- Provide a strong and informed voice on stakeholder committees, including but not limited to the Manitoba Crop Variety Evaluation Team (MCVET), Prairie Grain Development Committee, Midge Tolerant Wheat Stewardship Team and Cereals Canada’s Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) Assessment Committee.
- Extend agronomic information and MCA-funded research results into impactful, producer-friendly language for inclusion in MCA publications, including but not limited to factsheets, the Focal Point (annual research-focused magazine) and social media platforms.
- Support creation and execution of agronomic extension campaigns with our industry partners’ agronomy staff to develop coordinated messaging where appropriate, including but not limited to Alberta Wheat, SaskBarley, SaskWheat, Alberta Barley, Cereals Canada and fellow Manitoba crop commodity associations.
- Assist with the review of research project proposals.
- Support extension of MCA’s Research on the Farm program.
- Provide support to provincial and national pest surveillance surveys.
- Represent, lead and assist in executing MCA events, including but not limited to Manitoba Ag Days, CropConnect Conference, Producer Malt Academy and ‘College’ events.

Qualifications

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, both written and oral, are imperative.
- Completed post-secondary education in agriculture or related discipline; M.Sc. a strong asset.
- Strong understanding and familiarity with Canadian agriculture and agronomy practices.
- Interest and enthusiasm to network and build relationships within the agricultural industry.
- Experience working for a not-for-profit organization and board of directors considered an asset.
