Overview
PURPOSE OF POSITION
Work is performed under the general direction of the Fire Prevention Officer. Inspects buildings to detect compliance with Codes, By-Laws and Regulations related to fire prevention; and enforces same with such authorities as may be derived from legislation including The City of Brandon’s Fire Prevention By-Law #7200 and the Manitoba "Fires Prevention and Emergency Response Act".
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Inspects assigned buildings and reviews building plans for fire hazards, efficiency of fire protection equipment and compliance with fire related Codes, By-Laws and Regulations;
• Reports on hazardous or non-complying conditions;
• Identifies and discusses hazardous or non-complying conditions with appropriate persons, interprets relevant provisions and recommends corrective actions or appropriate fire prevention actions;
• Issues written orders and takes necessary corrective measures to achieve compliance;
• Maintain accurate records and statistical information within the department’s database.
• Participates in the investigation of suspicious fires in the City of Brandon as directed;
• Liaises with a variety of internal and external contacts on matters relating to all facets of fire prevention work;
• Trains and advises other Department personnel in fire prevention and inspection techniques in cooperation with the Training Officer as directed;
• Promotes fire prevention by conducting Fire Safety Education programs as directed;
• Attends courses or seminars as directed by the Fire Prevention Officer or Department;
• May relieve the Fire Prevention Officer in his/her absence
• May be required to perform firefighting / EMS duties as directed;
• Performs all other related duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications
MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
• Applicant must have achieved the classification of First-Class Firefighter
• Hold and maintain valid Class IV with air endorsement Province of Manitoba driver's license;
• Successful completion of course work offered by the Manitoba Fire College to include:
o Fire Inspector Level I or Level l (NFPA 1031);
o Fire Service Instructor Level I or Emergency Services Instructor Level l (NFPA 1041);
o Fire Investigation (NFPA 1033)
