Communications Installation Technician

Overview

The Communications Installation Technician program will give students the practical skills and knowledge needed to work in the communications industry. Graduates will install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair communications equipment for voice, video, and data. This may include performing new installations, add-ons and relocations and perform preventative maintenance and explain the correct operation of equipment to end-users. This includes practical skills developed through labs and hands-on training.

There will be a significant work integrated learning component through industry work experience.

Program Learning Outcomes

  • Install and maintain communications equipment in accordance with relevant operational guidelines.
  • Install cabling and connectors according to industry standards. 
  • Apply appropriate troubleshooting techniques to perform basic repairs to electronic circuits, and communications systems.
  • Configure and test networks and computer systems.
  • Apply relevant workplace health and safety practices in compliance with safety policies and current regulations for workplaces. 
  • Complete work in compliance with industry standards, applicable codes, policies and procedures, and regulations. 
  • Work professionally both independently and as part of a team including problem solving and critical thinking.
  • Communicate and collaborate with supervisors and coworkers to complete projects on time and to maintain effective working relationships.  
  • Demonstrate effective client relations and interpersonal skills to deliver high-quality, customer-focused service in the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of communications equipment and systems.
