Chemical Engineering Technology

Overview

This new program is a three-year program, leading to the award of a diploma in Chemical Engineering Technology. This program has six semesters, with work integrated learning components, and will run as a full-time program in Brandon in the new Prairie Innovation Centre for Sustainable Agriculture.

This new program will offer an attractive, technology-oriented program with broad employability skills to work in a number of related occupations, and specifically supporting Manitoba’s food processing and manufacturing needs. Students will obtain industry-supported, industry-driven skills in a “learn by doing” environment. A final industry-sponsored capstone project will demonstrate value to sponsors and students by integrating state-of-the-art practices to solve real-world problems.

Did you know...?

Chemical science technologists provide technical support to teams of chemists, chemical engineers, and related professionals. Chemical technologists generally specialize in an area such as analytical chemistry, production of industrial chemicals, materials science, food technology, mineral processing, pulp and paper technology, recycling technology, industrial chemistry, or environmental monitoring and protection.

Upon successful completion of the Chemical Science Technology program graduates can carry out tasks in compliance with statutes, regulations, standards and procedures. They can interpret and present data, co-ordinate and perform quantitative and qualitative experiments, prepare compounds, maintain and control industrial chemical processes, prepare and interpret technical documents, and coordinate quality control and quality assurance procedures to meet organizational requirements. Graduates can also troubleshoot industrial or chemical processes and laboratory equipment. They can apply communication, teamwork, leadership, organizational and technology skills to support laboratory and engineering activities. As well, they can also apply principles of ethics and sustainability to the decision-making process.

Program Learning Outcomes

The program aims to produce graduates who will reliably demonstrate the ability to:

  • Perform all work in compliance with relevant statutes, regulations, standards, practices and guidelines.
  • Implement, co-ordinate and evaluate quality control and quality assurance procedures to meet organizational standards and requirements.
  • Troubleshoot industrial or chemical processes and laboratory equipment.
  • Solve complex problems and perform tasks by applying principles of mathematics, physics, chemistry and chemical engineering.
  • Perform, co-ordinate, implement and validate laboratory procedures to conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses and tests.
  • Prepare and purify compounds using standard synthesis and purification procedures.
  • Maintain and control industrial or chemical processes and assist with their design using chemical engineering principles.
  • Analyze and interpret data using statistical methods.
  • Select and use current technologies in chemical engineering tasks and projects.
  • Prepare, modify, interpret and present technical documents for chemical engineering applications.
  • Apply best practices for sustainability.
  • Develop strategies for ongoing personal and professional development to enhance work performance in a multi-disciplinary workplace.
