Garry Jones- Instructor of the Year

Assiniboine College Electrical Instructor Garry Jones has been named Technical Training Instructor of the Year by Apprenticeship Manitoba. The award was presented at the annual Apprenticeship Awards of Distinction, which celebrate excellence in technical education and the vital role instructors play in shaping Manitoba’s skilled workforce.

Now in his twentieth year as an instructor, Jones noted that being nominated by two Level 4 Electrical students, Kenny Shurvell and Michael Connor Schepp, made the recognition especially meaningful. He said that when recognition starts with students, “it hits differently,” adding that they are the reason he loves teaching. “It’s easy to give your best when you’ve got students who work hard, show up eager to learn, and push themselves to grow.”

One of the highlights for Jones was being able to be there with his wife Tracy, the two students who nominated him, as well as colleagues from Assiniboine. “Having Tracy and my friends and students there meant a lot. She (Tracy) has been so patient and supportive through the long hours and the endless shop talk. I honestly couldn’t do this without her.”

This year, 37 businesses and individuals were nominated by colleagues, apprentices, and industry partners for their outstanding contributions to Manitoba’s skilled trades. From leadership and mentorship to excellence in teaching and craftsmanship, each nominee plays a vital role in building a stronger workforce for the province.

Jim DeGraeve, Acting Dean of Trades at Assiniboine College, commended Jones for his dedication and impact on the hundreds of students he has taught over the years. "Garry consistently demonstrates the highest standards of a trades educator. His dedication to student success, combined with his ability to instill confidence in his students, and his deep passion for the electrical field make him an exceptional instructor. He encourages his students to challenge themselves and use their training to reach their full potential. This award is a well-deserved recognition of the difference Garry makes every day."

Jones was quick to share the spotlight with his peers, saying that every nominee in every category deserved recognition. “We’re all passionate about helping apprentices and students succeed, and I’m proud to be part of such a dedicated group. I’m fortunate to work with an amazing team at Assiniboine. From the faculty to the admin staff, to the managers, they all care deeply about what they do every single day. Being surrounded by that kind of passion pushes me to be better.”
