WEST-CAN HR SOLUTIONS IS CURRENTLY RECRUITING FOR A FULL TIME NIGHT EDITOR FOR THE BRANDON SUN.

This is a great opportunity to work for a well-respected daily newspaper in the welcoming and friendly community of Brandon, Manitoba! The Brandon Sun has been serving readers in Brandon and area for over 135 years. The Night Editor position is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Editor or aspiring Reporter or Journalist to further their skills and experience by being part of The Brandon Sun team.

The successful applicant will be a talented and accomplished individual who wants to help lead an award-winning daily newsroom. The Night Editor assists the Managing Editor in directing story and photography coverage for the newspaper. They also supervise the Reporters and ensure articles are on track to be completed on time, as well as provide feedback and advice on stories through the editing process.

The hours of work are 3:00 pm - 11:00 pm, Monday to Friday.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Editing stories for the daily newspaper and the website.
Running the daily story schedule when the shift begins; this responsibility includes assigning stories, photos, and deciding the overall layout of the front page.
Planning overall page layout with our Winnipeg-based designers and conducting page adjustments as necessary
Writing occasional breaking news briefs for the website and ensuring that edited stories for the next day’s newspaper are published to the website before the end of the shift.
The Night Editor oversees planning, editing, and layout of our weekly section “Westman This Week” and assigning story content for special sections to internal Reporters and external Freelancers.
In the absence of the Managing Editor, the Night Editor oversees the newsroom.

QUALIFICATIONS:
A degree or diploma in Journalism, or a related field, and multiple years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience are required.
Strong news judgement and professionalism is required to represent the Brandon Sun positively in the community.
Supervisory experience is required, along with proven leadership skills.
A sophisticated, artistic, and creative eye for page layouts and visually appealing photos.
Strong work ethic with the ability to remain calm in stressful situations involving strict deadlines.
Exceptional writing, editing, and grammatical skills.
Strong understanding of Canadian Press Style and strong journalistic ethics.
The ability to multitask with excellent time management skills.
Must have strong computer skills with the ability to learn new programs and software.
Experience using InDesign and Photoshop is an asset.
Must have a valid Driver’s License and reliable vehicle.
