It is not often a left side hitter becomes the starting setter with only one week of preparation. Rookie left side/setter Noah Barcellona led Assiniboine Community College Cougars (ACC) Cougars to a weekend sweep for the week ending Nov. 7, 2021 in his new position.

In two home victories, Barcellona registered 68 assists plus three solo blocks to move the Cougars to a 2-1 league record in the second week of the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) men’s volleyball season.

The Brandon native began the week with 24 assists in a three set win on Fri., Nov. 5 against Université de Saint-Boniface (USB) Les Rouges (0-3). Then he continued to be the ‘quarterback’ of ACC attack with an impressive 44 assists plus three solo blocks in a tough four set result versus Les Rouges.

ACC’s Head Coach Joel Small stated, “Noah had to go from left side to setter in an instant when our starting setter went down with an injury. In just one week, he put in a ton of work to prepare himself and his team for our Friday and Saturday matches against USB. Noah led the Cougars to a weekend sweep running a smooth and effective offence. He was an energy guy for us all weekend getting multiple solo stuff blocks, timely digs and veteran decision making for someone who started setting last week.”

The Civil Technician student-athlete at ACC will continue to be versatile this upcoming weekend as the Pilots go on the road at Providence University College (PUC) Pilots (3-0) in a match of the top two MCAC teams on Saturday, November 13 at 1:30 p.m. CT.
