Program Learning Outcomes
The Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technology program is a two and one-half -year diploma program. Students will develop the knowledge and skills needed to perform laboratory tests, general radiography and electrocardiograms. Studies will focus on:
- anatomy and physiology
- clinical chemistry, hematology, urinalysis
- electrocardiography
- image acquisition
- laboratory procedures and quality management
- lab result correlation

The program uses hands-on learning to help you build knowledge and skills. An in-depth clinical provides experience in operating radiographic equipment to obtain diagnostic images, performing electrocardiographs and conducting routine laboratory procedures. In addition, the program includes 29 weeks of supervised clinical experience.
Success Factors and What Graduates Can Do
Being a CLXT demands high standards and good empathy while building professional skills such as teamwork, problem-solving and communication. Graduates will be eligible to work as a CLXT in the province of Manitoba. They combined elements of each of these two occupational fields:
- Medical laboratory technicians conduct routine medical laboratory tests and set up, clean and maintain medical laboratory equipment. They are employed in medical laboratories in hospitals, clinics, research facilities, post-secondary educational institutions and government research laboratories. Pathologists' assistants assist at autopsies and examinations of surgical specimens or perform autopsies under a pathologist's supervision. They are usually employed in hospitals and universities.
- Medical Radiation Technologists operate radiographic and radiation therapy equipment to administer radiation treatment and produce images of body structures for the diagnosis and treatment of injury and disease. Careers & Connections
Careers
Combined laboratory and X-ray technologists are professionals designed to fill the needs in rural hospitals and smaller communities (typically less than 10,000 people). Smaller rural communities will allow graduates to use all of their training and skills. Some CLXT graduates do find work in private urban clinics but will often use less of their overall training. In rural hospitals and health centres, graduates use the full range of their skills and play an integral role on health care teams.
Connections
Assiniboine has a number of agreements with other colleges, universities and professional organizations, making it possible to apply credit taken at Assiniboine to programs at other institutions. For information on agreements, see Articulation Agreements.
