Primary Care Paramedic

This course provides an overview of human anatomy and physiology. Students will explore the structure and function of major organ systems, their interrelationships, and their role in maintaining homeostasis. Emphasis is placed on understanding normal physiological processes and common pathologies in order to support excellence in patient-centered care.

The Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers (HCP)(C) is a classroom course that is designed to teach a variety of healthcare professionals how to recognize a number of life-threatening emergencies, how to provide CPR, how to use an AED and how to relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner.

In this course students develop knowledge and skills in recognizing and treating cardiovascular emergencies. Students practice electrocardiogram interpretation, patient assessment, and treatment planning in simulated environments.

In this course students participate in supervised hospital experiences across emergency and medical units. Emphasis is placed on patient assessment, documentation, and collaborative care within interprofessional teams. Students will practice patient assessments, apply treatment modalities, and utilize hospital equipment.

This course improves students' ability to navigate the college experience and environment, including student's rights, roles, and responsibilities. In this course, students reflect on their skills, attitudes, and expectations and develop learning strategies to help them to become successful, resilient, and self-directed learners. The course covers topics such as success in online learning, time management strategies, learning strategies, assessment taking strategies, academic integrity, information and digital literacy, and wellness, among others. It integrates elements of student orientation.

In this course students study principles of disaster management including hazardous materials, mass casualty incidents, and emergency coordination. Students examine teamwork, communication, and safety in large-scale events.

In this course students complete a supervised placement with an ambulance service. Students integrate clinical, professional, and operational skills in real-world patient care under the guidance of practicing paramedics. This final field practicum will allow students to apply all knowledge and skills gained previously in the program as they progress towards independent practice as a Primary Care Paramedic.

In this course, students develop foundational knowledge and skills in emergency medical care. Instruction emphasizes patient and scene assessment, vital signs monitoring, trauma and medical care, safety, infection control, and health system navigation, preparing students for clinical decision-making, skill application, a simulation-based assessment and a supervised community field practicum, and progression to advanced training. Content includes management of environmental hazards and CBRNE-related incidents in alignment with CPCF competencies.

In this course students expand their study to chronic and complex conditions including pediatric, obstetric, and geriatric presentations. Students adapt assessment and care planning for diverse patient needs.

This course introduces students to the fundamental principles of medical terminology used in healthcare settings. Emphasis is placed on understanding the structure, meaning and correct usage of medical terms through word roots, prefixes, suffixes, and abbreviations.
Students will learn body system and pathological condition terminology relevant to the role of healthcare practitioners to support safe
and accurate communication within the workplace.

Students develop strategies for personal health, fitness, and psychological resilience in paramedicine. Emphasis is placed on safe lifting and movement, stress and fatigue management, self-regulation skills, and sustainable wellness practices that support safe practice in demanding environments. Students also learn collegial support approaches that are professional, non-judgmental, and appropriately bounded.

Students are introduced to foundational patient care and assessment skills necessary for safe and effective prehospital care. Through guided practice and simulation, learners develop competence in scene management, basic patient assessment, vital sign measurement, communication, and safe lifting and movement. Emphasis is placed on integrating theory and skill performance through repeated, structured practice and feedback in realistic scenarios. Students apply professional standards, teamwork, and situational awareness to all skills, fostering the confidence and accuracy required for field readiness.

In this course students explore principles of pharmacology and fluid therapy. Students examine medication actions, safe dosage calculations, and administration responsibilities within ethical and legal frameworks. Emphasis is placed on medication classifications, mechanisms of action, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, contraindications, drug interactions, accurate documentation, and integration of pharmacologic decision-making into paramedic patient care planning.

Prerequisite: PARA-0001 Foundations of Emergency Care Corequiste: HLTH-0344 Paramedic Wellness Students develop the professional behaviours, communication skills, ethical decision-making, and documentation practices required for safe paramedic practice. Emphasis is placed on legal and regulatory expectations, scope of practice, professionalism, informed consent and capacity, patient refusal processes, interprofessional collaboration, quality improvement, and safe, respectful patient-centered care in diverse settings. Students practice professional communication in challenging interactions, complete high-quality patient care documentation, and apply standards to realistic scenarios.
