Animal Care and Agriculture Coordinator
Overview
Heritage Park is looking for an experienced individual to join our Agriculture Programming Department in the role of Animal Care and Agriculture Coordinator. Under the direction of the Animal Care and Agriculture Manager, the Animal Care and Agriculture Coordinator assists with daily agricultural operations, care of livestock and facilities and delivery of related programs. This position also requires active public engagement to create memorable and lasting experiences for guests.
This is a temporary full-time position with an anticipated duration of one year.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Supports the Animal Care and Agriculture Manager with all aspects of the Ranch operations, including:
o development and implementation of interpretative and special programs
o operation of a mixed farm, and the Livery, Carriage House and Ranch areas
o provision of wagon tours and carriage service
o serving as the point of contact for any animal care and agriculture related issues or concerns during the Animal Care and Agriculture Manager’s absence.
o coordinating tasks among Animal Care and Agriculture Lead Hands and Teamster Assistants as directed by the Animal Care and Agriculture Manager
Responsible for creating positive guest interactions, including sharing historic and animal information on a scheduled and unscheduled basis.
Provides guests with basic information about structures, setting and activities at the Ranch
Engages the public in fun and interactive activities designed to create memorable experiences for visitors to the Ranch.
Assists with the implementation Ranch-related day camp programming
Participates in the acclimatization and conditioning of Park livestock
Consults with the Animal Care and Agriculture Manager concerning feed, conditioning, housing and maintenance requirements for all Park horses and livestock
Performs daily chores and maintenance of horses and other livestock as needed
Watches for sickness or disease in livestock and assists in prescribed treatment
Ensures regular conditioning of all horses, and harnesses and drives horses in a responsible manner to ensure guest safety
Contributes to the maintenance and cleanliness of relevant grounds, buildings and equipment. Notes and reports property damage and any unsafe working conditions
Provides service and information to visitors in a friendly and courteous manner
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent; some post-secondary animal husbandry training beneficial
Past experience in customer service, tourism or related industry is an asset
Comfortable engaging with guests through both planned and unplanned interactions
Strong oral communication skills
Preferably three to five years of job-related experience
Skills:
Must possess proven animal husbandry and horse handling skills
Strong interpersonal communication skills and commitment to providing excellent customer service
Demonstrated mature judgement and constant attention to safety
Special Clothing and Equipment:
This is a costumed position with a costume(s) to be provided by Heritage Park
Appropriate footwear as designated by the Costume Room of Heritage Park will be provided by the employee
Hours of Work/Working Conditions:
40 hours per week. Hours may vary, weekend and evening work is required
Various scheduled hours of work including possible weekends, and statutory holidays
Exposure to a variety of weather conditions is certain; and
Working with livestock implies a degree of unpredictability.
