Animal Care and Agriculture Manager

Overview

Heritage Park is looking for an experienced individual to join our Agriculture Programming Department in the role of Animal Care and Agriculture Manager. Under the direction of the Director, Programming and Experiences, the Animal Care and Agriculture Manager is responsible for all operational requirements for agriculture programming and animal husbandry at Heritage Park. The incumbent must be collaborative, safety-minded and customer focused.

This position works closely with the Manager, Interpretation, to ensure Animal Care and Agriculture employees deliver memorable and engaging guest experiences.

This is a temporary full-time position with an anticipated duration of one year.

Duties & Responsibilities
• Supervises the operation and maintenance of a living history mixed farm.
• Oversees livestock care procedures; establishes and administers corresponding policies.
• Ensures all Animal Care and Agriculture staff are following animal handling safety guidelines and operating procedures.
• Works with the Director to create and implement animal and farm experience programs that engages and delights our guests.
• Maintains well-being of large and small livestock and observes animals for signs of health problems or injuries and medicates animals.
• Responsible for hiring, training and supervising and performance reviews of all full-time and seasonal Animal Care and Agriculture employees. Ensures all Animal Care and Agriculture staff are competent livestock handlers and are able to engage with Heritage Park guests as required.
• At times will engages with customers on stories of the animals and the farm.
• Liaises with Manager, Interpretation, to implement and monitor a daily public engagement program that requires scheduled and non-scheduled guest interactions.
• Supervises the conditioning and training of horses to meet driving and/or riding requirements for public and handling safety. Approves training programs for animals and teamsters, keeps records of training plans and attainments as directed or required.
• Conducts routine site upkeep and maintenance of the barns, outbuildings, and farm specific field equipment and fences/animal enclosures. Maintains and repairs relevant equipment as required.
• With the Director, oversees the acquisition, lending and de-accessioning of all livestock.
• Develops, oversees and implements department budget. Makes agricultural supply purchases as approved within approved budget parameters.
• Acts as a teamster as required for daily programming and special charters.
• Liaises with other Heritage Park departments as necessary.;
• Completes reports as required.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:
• Completion of post-secondary education in Animal Science, Biology, Agriculture or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
• Three to five years of experience working with livestock including draft horses and a familiarity with animal health and care.
Skills:
• Demonstrated ability to identify and remedy issues pertaining to livestock.
• Possess a health and safety- oriented attitude.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills with ability to inspire staff to perform at their best.
• Strong supervisory, management and program planning skills.
• Demonstrated enthusiasm and comfort with horses and livestock including driving a team.
• Experience in operating machinery, basic equipment and tools.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office software including MS Word, Outlook, MS Excel and PowerPoint, and Teams.
• Must possess a valid Class 5 driver's license and current satisfactory driver’s abstract.

Hours of Work & Working Conditions:
• 40 hours per week. Availability for some evenings, weekends, statutory holidays and on-call (short notices for emergencies) is required
• Working around animals on a daily basis, which implies a degree of unpredictability.
• This position involves some amount of physical labour and as this is largely an outdoor position. Exposure to a variety of weather conditions is certain.
• Must adhere to costume policies, wearing designated costume provided by Heritage Park.
