Child & Youth Counsellor

Overview

The YWCA Brandon Westman Women's Shelter is looking for a full-time CHILD & YOUTH COUNSELLOR. The Westman Women's Shelter is a 24 hour crisis shelter that provides services to abused women and their families.

The Child & Youth Program provides a safe and supportive environment for children who have experienced or witnessed abuse. The counselling available to the children while in Shelter assist in “breaking the secret” of abuse and understanding the dynamics of abuse in the context of family relationships. Support is available to children and youth while they are at the Shelter and after they leave. Children and youth who did not stay in Shelter are able to access the Child & Youth Program if requested. The Child & Youth Counsellor is responsible for coordinating all aspects of services to children including Girl Space, school programs and presentations, Children’s Support Group, Play Group, Aboriginal Culture, advocacy and referrals and counselling services.

Qualifications

The Westman Women’s Shelter is looking for a full-time CHILD & YOUTH COUNSELLOR.

Job Requirements:

• Must have thorough understanding of the issue of violence against women and their children, including types of abuse, the impact of violence on the children and the related historical, societal and power issues.
• Have a positive self-concept.
• University degree in Social Work, Psychology, Sociology or related field and/or a combination of education and related experience
• Demonstrate knowledge of child development and how to develop age appropriate programming for children who have witnessed family violence
• Minimum one-year supervised counselling experience including individual and group counselling.
• Experience in public speaking and presentations
• To be able to work effectively as a team member and to maintain an open, communicative and supportive working environment.
• Ability to work alone and exercise good judgement in handling the special demands inherent in a crisis facility. (i.e. high client numbers, assessing client priority – crisis line, walk-ins, etc.)
• Ability to manage heavy caseload effectively and professionally.
• Excellent inter-personal communication, written and conflict resolution skills.
• Excellent computer and social medial skills and a willingness to learn new technological tools
• Knowledge of community resources
• Patience, maturity, dependability and flexibility.
• Current First Aid and CPR and Food Safe.
• Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
• Clear understanding of the child welfare mandate.
