Overview
The Charleswood Rotary Club and Friends of the Harte Trail are looking to hire individuals under the Urban Green Team program to assist with park management projects including trail maintenance, invasive species removal, and assisting with planting/maintaining trees and shrubs.
PROJECT LOCATION: Assiniboine Forest and the Harte Trail
PROJECT/JOB DESCRIPTION: The Assiniboine Forest encompasses 287 hectares of aspen-oak forest, wetlands, and small meadows. Numerous trails run through the forest and require annual maintenance during the spring and summer months. The Harte Trail extends from the west perimeter highway in Charleswood to the south end of the Assiniboine Forest. Annual maintenance is required along the Harte trail including pruning, maintaining tree plantings, and invasive species removal.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Maintain and build trails, spread woodchips, prune trees and shrubs
• Assist with invasive species control, debris cleanup, graffiti removal, empty garbage bins
• Assist with the planting and maintenance of native trees, shrubs, grasses and wildflowers
• Potential for opportunities to lead or assist with environmental education programs
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Applicants must be 15-29 years of age to qualify.
• Enrolment in post-secondary education with specialization in Environmental Science/Studies, Biology, Ecology, Horticulture, Land and Water Management or related field
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
• Self-motivated and reliable
• Willingness to work outdoors (under adverse conditions, at times)
• Ability to communicate effectively with the public
• Interest and general knowledge of Winnipeg’s natural areas an asset
• Manitoba Class 5 driver’s license and experience operating off-road vehicles an asset
