Residential Care Worker

Overview

Position Summary:
The Residential Care Worker supports and facilitates the daily activities of residents related to each individual’s recovery plan.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
• Implements the residential recovery plan:
o Assists residents to work toward clearly set goals and help make decisions based on the resident’s values (i.e. teaching and supporting the practice of activities of daily living)
o Respects and encourages appropriate familial and community involvement
o Clarifies boundaries with residents
o Varies interpersonal approach to fit resident style
o Uses language and behaviors, which demonstrate and show respect for resident individuality and dignity
o Challenges residents to overcome barriers to personal growth
• Organizes and facilitates psycho-social education in individual and group settings:
o Encouraging the practice of appropriate coping strategies
o Facilitates the resident in their day to day activities and encouraging natural (non-professional) networks and supports
o Acts as a positive role model
o Cultivates a broad range of personal interests and maintains awareness of social and recreational events in the community
• Organizes, facilitates and assists in the performance of routine household tasks:
o Maintains the facility in an orderly manner
o Encourages participation of all residents in household routines
o Facilitates skill acquisition as it relates to resident participation in carrying out household tasks

Qualifications

Qualifications:
• Education/Certification:
o Post-secondary education related to health care or human services preferred
o Current 1st Aide Certification required
• Experience:
o Experience in Mental Health an asset
• Knowledge, Skills and Ability:
o Ability to understand relationships and treat each appropriately
o Ability to make appropriate decisions and to process problem solving
o Ability to be flexible to meet different shift schedules as required
o Ability to react appropriately in crisis and under stress
o Ability to respond to immediate resident issues while maintaining work on long term goals
o Ability to provide a functional assessment of observed behavior
o Ability to work effectively with inter-disciplinary team and with external organizations
o Ability to deal with people in a therapeutic environment
o Good written and verbal communication skills
