We are seeking qualified individuals to train for a career as a Service Person.

This 4-year apprenticeship program includes on-the-job training and 12 weeks of competency-based classroom training that prepares you for a career as a service person. Service Persons monitor and maintain Natural Gas distribution systems, respond to Natural Gas related emergencies and service and inspect Natural Gas appliances.

As a Service Person Trainee, you will:
-conduct odorant tests, cathodic reads and regulator station inspections;
-repair and make alterations to the Natural Gas distribution system including above and below grade piping and equipment;
-replace Natural Gas meters and regulators and repair or install service lines.
-locate company underground Natural Gas and electrical lines;
-respond to Natural Gas related emergencies such as damaged gas lines, gas odor calls, fire calls and Carbon Monoxide calls;
-inspect all new and replacement gas appliances;
-repair and adjust furnaces, boilers, water heaters and residential cooking appliances.

As part of your training, you will be required to obtain a Utility Gas Fitter Licence by completing the Manitoba Department of Labour Utility Gas Fitter Licence exam. Service Persons need to continuously upgrade their skills and knowledge to keep pace with the ongoing development of new technology in the Natural Gas industry.

Safety is our top priority and we will follow Manitoba Health's pandemic-related safety and health protocols throughout the recruitment process for this program. This will result in a longer than normal recruitment process. At this time, we expect successful candidates will start in June. Anticipated start dates, and timelines for recruitment activities, may be adjusted as required given pandemic-related restrictions.

Qualifications

Qualifications:
-High school graduate with a minimum of the following specific credits: Mathematics 40S (Applied or Pre Calculus); Physics 30S; and English 40.
-Possess a valid Class 5 Manitoba driver's licence (intermediate or full)
-Meet the challenges of physically demanding work in all types of weather.
-Capable of working at heights on ladders, scaffolding, catwalks, roof tops and mechanical lifts.
-Be prepared to work with higher pressure natural gas and mechanical and electrical systems while adhering to established safety procedures.
-Be prepared to work in confined spaces with hazardous products while conforming to established safety procedures.
-Be prepared to work various shifts which may include days, evenings, weekends, nights and/or statutory holidays.
-Be prepared to interact with customers as required.
-A certificate in a registered trade (e.g. plumber) would be an asset.

The selection process includes aptitude testing, a panel interview, and a one-day Manitoba Hydro sponsored Skills Assessment and Trades Orientation program. Candidates selected for an interview must provide a current driver's abstract at the time of their interview.
