Overview
Stolon Glance Agronomy provides agronomic services to potato growers in the Western/Central area of Manitoba. Manitoba is the second largest potato producing province in Canada and is home to 3 potato processing facilities. While potatoes are at the heart of what we do, our contracted acres also include cereals and oilseeds which play a vital role within a sustainable farm management system. This is an ideal opportunity for a student seeking a career in agronomy to gain valuable experience in a specialized, high value sector. We are currently seeking a highly motivated individual to fulfill the duties described below.
Duties
Necessary training will be provided. Previous farm experience is an asset, but is not required.
• Collecting soil and tissue samples
• Assist with planter evaluations & other planting operations
• Plant/stem and stand counts
• Assisting with field scouting for disease and insect monitoring
• Aid in the installation of soil moisture monitoring devices
• In-field data entry and record keeping
• Pre-harvest yield & quality sampling
Term of Employment/Hours of work
The summer student will be employed on a full-time basis commencing in early May and ending around August 28. Hours are variable and dependent upon required activities
Qualifications
This position requires a valid class 5 license and the ability to travel to and from various field locations spanning from Carberry, MacGregor, Glenboro, and Treherne Manitoba (vehicle is provided). Must be able to safely load/unload and operate an all-terrain vehicle. Needs to be physically able to lift up to 50-lb and work in diverse weather conditions. The successful candidate will be hard-working, possess good problem solving skills, be detail oriented, and have the ability to manage time efficiently. The successful candidate will be expected to work primarily independently but also must exhibit good teamwork skills.
