DESCRIPTION
The Manitoba Horticulture Productivity Enhancement Centre (MHPEC) Inc. is the industry partner
of the Canada-Manitoba Crop Diversification Centre (CMCDC) in Carberry, Manitoba. CMCDC is
an industry-government site dedicated to applied research. MHPEC Inc. is hiring an Applied
Research Technician to support the applied potato research program. The specific function of this
role is to assist the MHPEC researcher in the development and execution of applied potato
research projects. This position is funded for two years, with a strong possibility of extension based
on performance and funding availability.
The research program focuses on the following priorities:
• Optimization of nutrient and pesticide inputs to maximize potato yield and quality.
• Optimization of water management (irrigation and drainage) for improved potato yield and
quality.
• Mitigation strategies for foliar and persistent soilborne diseases.
Key Responsibilities
This role includes, but is not limited to, the following duties:
• Supporting the researcher in developing new projects through idea generation, planning, and
networking.
• Assisting the researcher in instructing, monitoring, and managing students and support staQ.
• Maintenance and calibration of technical equipment used in research trials.
• Operation of farm machinery.
• Collection and preparation of soil and plant samples for analysis and submission.
• Data entry, report writing, and proofreading.
Representing MHPEC Inc. and its projects at conferences in Manitoba and beyond.
Qualifications
• Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 5 driver’s license.
• Must be able to work extended hours during peak periods (growing and harvest seasons).
• Must be physically capable of working outdoors in various environmental conditions.
• Strong agronomy skills in potatoes preferred.
• Experience with data collection, GIS, or research trials preferred.
• Knowledge of disease and pest management in potatoes preferred.
• Experience with operating farm equipment preferred.
