Position Conditions: This is a full-time, up to one (1) year term position, of 36.25 hours per week. Should the position become permanent, this term may become permanent. It will be offered in accordance with conditions identified in the Collective Agreement between the City of Brandon and CUPE Local 69. First consideration will be given to current City of Brandon CUPE employees. The City of Brandon reserves the right to underfill this position.
Rate of Pay: $31.08- $33.46 per hour (2026 Rates)
Closing Date: 11:59pm on March 19, 2026.
This competition will include testing and an interview.
PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Environmental Initiatives Programmer is responsible for supporting the implementation of the City’s Climate Change Action Plan. Activities include scheduling, reporting, data tracking, volunteer management, presentations, and creating and implementing various outreach programs. Outreach program themes include but are not limited to, active transportation, energy efficiency, and waste diversion initiatives. This position may require flexible hours to be present for programs and events, including evenings and weekends.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Responds to resident enquiries on environmental programs/concerns.
• Supports preparation, implementation, and monitoring of Climate Change Actions
• Seeks partnerships and/or funding opportunities that advance Climate Change Action Plan strategies.
• Collaborates with external stakeholders to identify, develop, and organize community events or programs.
• Research leading practices to inform Climate Change Action strategies.
• Supports the Environmental Initiatives Coordinator to administer the Climate Change Action Plan.
• Administers and enhances existing and/or develops and delivers new educational programs for internal staff and the public and the Brandon School Division (BSD).
• Administers environmental grants provided to the City by other levels of government or external agencies.
• Supports and coordinates energy efficiency initiatives with internal and external stakeholders, identify energy efficiency opportunities including program advocacy includes marketing needs, development and utilization of applicable promotional materials and tools.
• Data input and measurable tracking.

MANDATORY EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• Grade 12, G.E.D., C.A.E.C., or Mature High School Diploma.
• Minimum one year of experience in the field of environmental studies to demonstrate ability to perform duties such as program administration and project management.
• Ability to hold and maintain Class 5 Province of Manitoba driver’s license and have access to a personal vehicle.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• Post-secondary accreditation or course work in the areas of sciences, environmental studies, project management, communications or equivalent.
• Previous experience coordinating or supervising volunteers.
• Demonstrated continuous learning.
WORK CONDITIONS
The Environmental Initiatives Programmer works independently and as part of a team providing support to a variety of people.
• Ability to manage multiple programs and make independent decisions (daily)
• Self-motivated and quality driven to perform independent projects (daily)
• Work in a shared and consultative manner with other employees and community members (daily)
• Travel throughout the City and visit various facilities, etc. in all types of weather conditions (occasionally)
• Distance travel may be required (occasionally)
• May be required to be available outside of normal working hours (occasionally)
