Greenhouse Manager

Overview

Job Title: Greenhouse Manager
Position Type: Full-Time
Compensation: (Dependent on Experience and Performance)
Reports to: Store Manager
Purpose: The Greenhouse Manager is passionate about horticulture, and excelling in leadership to achieve targets, goals, and timelines set by the Store manager and ownership.
Job Summary: The role of the Greenhouse Manager is a full-time year-round position except for some mandatory time off in the month of January. The role of this manager is to work in union with the Horticultural Production Manager to maintain the effectiveness and efficiency of its staff of between 3 – 15 personnel in its daily operations towards upholding the Livingstone standard of cleanliness, organization, and production of the highest quality plant material. The job is that of a floor manager which is physically demanding. There is clerical and desk work needed throughout the day.

Responsibilities
• Scheduling: You will be responsible to work with the Store Manager to make decisions such as when to send staff home early or extend shifts when required to ensure the proper schedule is maintained in the production of the crops. Although a routine schedule of Monday – Friday is historic and normal, early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and emergency call-in shifts are required from time to time as dictated by the requirements of the facility and the production of crops.
• Crops: This position oversees the Horticultural manager and works in unison to ensure the proper support for the success of the specific crops are a success as follows, but not limited to hanging baskets, annuals, patio planters, tropicals, seasonal planters, and seasonal crops (poinsettias, grinch trees). In addition to this, there will be Christmas tree care and other post-living seasonal decorations.
• Ensure all crops are clearly labeled and plants are priced.
• Ensure all crops and indoor plants are watered at assigned times throughout the day.
• Ensure regular inventory checks for required grow products.
• IPM: Oversee the Integrated Pest Management program to ensure it is following the comprehensive written plan and a log is recorded for each crop and range of greenhouses for each crop cycle. Actions to prevent and correct are fundamental, and they need to be managed.
• Review with HPM orders for Submission to the store manager for request items such as fungicides, pesticides, and everyday items needed to perform the work to the Store Managers for approval, prior to ordering.
• Ensure regular inventory checks of IPM products.
• Review with HPM all treatment of plans and coordinate special applications.
• Building and Facility: Building and facility maintenance pertaining to commercial and retail greenhouse components and technologies are a significant part of this role. You will be responsible for the general maintenance and repairs to features but are not limited to; venting, heating, cooling, and irrigation.
• Monitor and maintain the greenhouse climate. You will be added to the climate control monitoring system.
• Check in to ensure that the monitoring of the irrigation system(s), fertilizer injection system, and water reservoir levels; are being reviewed daily.
• Promote, organize, schedule, and complete work on the Sales/fundraising team with Ownership and store manager to ensure that we are promoting our additional programs such as:
• Fundraisers
• Tours & workshops
• Day camps
• Seasonal & special events
• Organize, schedule, and complete follow-ups with HPM, store manager & Sales pro to ensure stock orders, special orders, and all crop stock are reviewed and approved prior to ordering.
• Complete the order with the vendor from submission to receiving (review SOP).
• Hiring and Training: You will be involved in the hiring process of new staff. You will be responsible for the proper training of new staff.
• Daily Duties
This includes but is not limited to the following:
– Upholding the greenhouse appearance in your department and outlying areas of your department
– Providing your staff with a list of daily duties and following through to ensure that tasks are completed to your satisfaction
– Maintain positive morale by encouraging and recognizing the good work of others.
• Provide accurate product information to customers (i.e. plant information, tree & shrub information, etc.) and inform them about discounts and special offers.
• Operate POS System to finalize customer transactions, as needed.
• Management meetings are held weekly. At these informal meetings, you will be expected to communicate the recent goings-on of each department, seasonal changes, ideas for improvement, etc.
• Assist HPM with the overwintering processes and shutdown of the crops, buildings, and materials.
• Responsible for the reviewing, and updating of daily, weekly, and monthly tasks via;
• Standard operation procedures
• One – Note (teams)
• Wrike- review HPM notes
• IPM ONLINE binder- signoffs
• Involved in the regular updates for pricing, and upkeep of the Inventory pricing system.
• Required to create and publish labeling, pricing, images, and update all crops as any changes are made; while working in union with HPM and store manager.
• Off-season duties, will include but not be limited to:
• Floor planning,
• Seasonal planning
• Cleanups
• Upkeep
• Software work
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualification & Experience Requirements
• Completion of grade 12 or equivalent
• Possess a valid class 5F driver’s license.
• Excellent computer and phone skills (POS Systems, etc.)
• Minimum 1 years+ in a similar Greenhouse Sales Role.
• Strong knowledge of growing and plant care, plant materials, etc.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
• Physically capable of handling up to 30-50lb. packages, trees, shrubs, etc.
• Management or business degree background, education, or working towards; a considerable asset.
• Horticulture or Agriculture background, education, or working towards; a considerable asset.
• Ability to work in a hot environment (approx. 30-35 Degrees Celsius)

Physical Conditions:
The duties of the Horticulture Production Manager are carried out primarily in a Greenhouse Environment
• Uses hands, arms, and shoulders when using various types of equipment (daily).
• Prepared to lift heavy loads as required.
• Ability to cross on uneven ground.
• Ability to work outside, in hot and cold environments.

Psychological/Stress Conditions:
The Horticulture Production Manager’s workload and environment do not generally increase employee emotional or stress levels.

• Periods of intense concentration when meeting deadlines and during peak periods (occasionally).

The Horticulture Production Manager works independently and in a team environment.
