Overview
Position Summary: The Cook/Janitor is responsible for preparing nutritious meals and maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the Little Hands Head Start facility. Duties include meal planning, food preparation, purchasing, facility cleaning, inventory tracking, and supporting a healthy environment for children and staff.
Key Responsibilities:
Plan weekly menus that meet Canada’s Food Guide and AHS nutrition guidelines
Prepare and serve meals and snacks in a timely, safe, and hygienic manner
Incorporate traditional Indigenous foods and cooking methods where appropriate
Maintain a clean and organized kitchen, following food safety standards
Daily inspections of the facility and equipment
Order and manage food inventory within a budget
Collaborate with educators and families to accommodate allergies and dietary restrictions
Maintain and clean the classroom, dust, sweep, mop, vacuum rugs, etc.
Sanitize and clean the front entrance, exits, and washrooms
Daily cleaning and sanitizing of the indoor play areas
Order supplies and keep track of stock inventory
Other duties as needed
Qualifications
Education and Qualifications:
Minimum high school diploma or GED
Food Safe Level 1 certification (or willingness to obtain)
First aid training certificate (or willingness to obtain)
Experience cooking for groups, preferably in a childcare or community setting
Hardworking, reliable, observant, and must have a positive attitude
Knowledge of Indigenous foods, traditions, and cultural practices
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
Clear criminal record and Child abuse check
Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle
