Alumni Awards 2022 - One to Watch Alumni Award - Dallas Flett-Wapash

While he was a student in the Interactive Media Arts program, Dallas distinguished himself as an empathetic classmate, an enthusiastic learner and a positive individual. He developed technical, design, and self-management skills all while displaying impressive emotional intelligence and displayed a love of learning and infectious positive attitude.

After graduating in 2017, Dallas continued his education at Brandon University (BU), completing a Fine Arts degree. While at BU, he discovered an opportunity to develop his educational skills while working with the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba. He was hired to help with an initiative to develop the digital arts community in Manitoba. He worked with the program’s director to develop outreach events in order to bring digital skills to underserved communities.

He was invited to present on an Indigenous-themed video game at the ImagineNATIVE Film and Media Arts Festival. This opened opportunities for him to share his digital skills with other creators around Canada. Soon after, he was invited to contribute as an affiliated artist at the new Aabijijiwan New Media Lab (University of Winnipeg).

He has become a community leader with his work in the local game development scene. He runs and encourages the WestJam game jam community— an open and accepting community that encourages learning and relationships for Westman game makers. Most recently, Dallas has moved north to work as School Finance Secretary/Graphic designer and Game Development instructor with youth in the Manitoba First Nations School System.
