Annual open house scheduled for February 23

Assiniboine will be a hub of activity on Thursday, February 23, as it welcomes the community to its annual Open House.

Future students, their families and interested residents can spend the day exploring the college as staff and students showcase the many program offerings for learners of all ages.

The college’s North Hill and Victoria Avenue East campuses in Brandon, as well as Parkland Campus in Dauphin, will be part of a daylong event with various activities scheduled to take place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“It’s for anyone thinking about joining our college community as a part or full-time student, whether that be directly from high school, transferring from another institution or entering the post-secondary environment as a mature student,” said Erin Dowd, Manager of Recruitment & Conversion at Assiniboine.

“We find nothing compares to getting people on campus and exploring our shops, labs and classrooms to get a real sense of what we can offer them.”

Staff, instructors, students and alumni will be on-hand to share a behind-the-scenes look at the wide array of program offerings. From learning about the ever-growing needs in the healthcare field to experiencing what it takes to join the fast-paced world of policing, there’s something for everyone to discover.

“Often students can formalize their education goals and begin to research the next step on their path through the information and experiences gathered at events like our open house,” said Dowd.

College staff will also be able to address questions surrounding everything from admission requirements and financial aid to athletics, learning support services and amenities on campus. For those seeking even more from their college years, the Students’ Association will be on hand to talk about leadership opportunities, events and support for students across the entire academic year.

Another highlight will be the mock disaster scenario taking place at the Victoria Avenue East campus. This scenario has current students and faculty from several programs showcasing careers in many disciplines and how they’re connected.

“The mock disaster scenario is an exciting performance to watch and highlights our philosophy of learn by doing,” said Wayne Jacobsen, Chairperson in Health and Human Services at Assiniboine.

Anyone interested in viewing the mock disaster scenario should register in advance to secure their spot. The scenario has three shows throughout the day (10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m.) and takes place in the college’s Public Safety Training Centre at the Victoria Avenue East Campus.

Pre-registration is available for the entire Open House for a customized experience, although not required for this come-and-go event. Details are available at assiniboine.net/openhouse.
