Assiniboine Community College has introduced a new Accounting advanced diploma that will include a 16-week co-op work placement. The program, which will begin in May 2022, is open to both domestic and international applicants.

“At Assiniboine, we pride ourselves on providing exceptional learning experiences and outcomes for students. A big piece of that is the learn by doing aspect of all programs,” said Bobbie Robertson, Dean, School of Business.

By adding a co-op work placement to the Accounting advanced diploma, students can gain real-world skills and knowledge, enhancing the experience and confidence that graduates will take away into their careers.

The one-year program provides a blend of classroom learning and work experience. Work placements will take place in Brandon and the surrounding rural area.

“Our Skills, Talent and Knowledge strategy highlights the importance of aligning education and training to help student’s success now and into the future,” said Hon. Wayne Ewasko, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Immigration.

When students have work experience as a part of their studies, they are able to connect to their employers while in school and are better prepared to enter the workforce.

“During the work placement component of this advanced diploma, students will work side by side with accounting professionals during tax season, so the experience will mimic career demands,” added Robertson.

Students who complete the program will have the opportunity to work toward the completion of the prerequisites for the Chartered Professional Accountants Professional Education Program (CPA PEP).

“I am proud to support this program and co-op work placements,” said Tere Stykalo, CPA, CGA, who is the Southman Regional Ag Leader with MNP.

I was a co-op student when I attended Assiniboine’s Business Administration program from 1989 to 1991. It was a great stepping stone to beginning my career. No matter where that path took me, the experience was invaluable.
