Assiniboine College secures $1.3 million investment and $700,000 donation to advance sustainable horticulture
December 27, 2024
Assiniboine received more than $3 million from the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, and Canada Foundation for Innovation & Research Manitoba to transform the horticulture production programming, expand infrastructure and support applied research projects that focus on sustainability. This included over $1.3 million from the governments of Canada and Manitoba through the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership and a $700,000 donation from the RBC Foundation.
The federal and provincial funding will support Assiniboine’s applied research in sustainable horticulture practices, including high tunnel crop production, passive greenhouse research, and developing crops resilient to extreme weather. These efforts aim to enhance food security and provide year-round local food production opportunities, particularly in collaboration with northern Indigenous communities.
These investments inspired more support and the RBC Foundation came on board with an additional contribution to the initiative. RBC's generous donation will aid in expanding Assiniboine’s Greenhouse in a Box initiative. This portable greenhouse is designed to extend growing seasons and train students in sustainable agriculture.
