Assiniboine Cougars affiliate with U18 women’s club volleyball

The Assiniboine Cougars will have an official affiliation with an under-18 women’s club volleyball team this upcoming season.

The first tryouts are at Assiniboine Community College’s Victoria Ave East Campus in Brandon on December 11 from 10 a.m. to noon.

This club team will be managed and coached by Jeff Maxwell. Jeff is a long-time coach of the Elton Collegiate Sabres. He has coached seven provincial championship teams and was named the 2015 Manitoba High School Athletics Coach of the Year. He also managed and coached the Big Bear women’s club volleyball program for the last 9 years. The Assiniboine Cougars club team will be a transformation of the Big Bear club team.

“I’m looking forward to working in partnership with Maxwell on this,” said Beth Clark, Athletics Manager. “To have our name and our logo in the club system is going to help our program and will also bolster the competition and level of volleyball at the club level in the City of Brandon, and provide profile to Assiniboine Cougars volleyball in the tournaments they play across the province and country.”

The ACC Cougars women’s volleyball team have five current and four past student athletes that went through the Big Bear club system (Current: Jaydean Bell, Samara Zatylny, Victoria King, Mackenzie Pearson, Charley Maxwell. Past: Brooke Huculak, Tawny Shelvey, Jessica Heeney, and Stephanie Willey.)

“I believe the Westman area is in need of another long-term stable girls club program,” says Maxwell. “I feel this is a great opportunity for ACC to help develop future athletes for their program along with giving athletes another option to play volleyball in the Westman region.”
