The Assiniboine Cougars have persevered through disappointment recently with the cancellation of the 2020 ACHA National Tournament Championship due to Covid-19, the Cougars Hockey program is only looking forward with the signing of Winnipeg forward, Katrina Tobin.

Winnipeg forward Katrina Tobin has spent the last season playing for the Winnipeg Avros team in the Manitoba AAA Female Midget Hockey League (MFMHL) while attending St. Mary’s Academy where she is an exceptional honor student. When she’s not at the rink, Tobin enjoys spending her time volunteering at a local nursing home and providing peer tutoring to younger students within her school.

The draw to the Assiniboine Cougar’s for Tobin was the impressive hockey program.

“I was familiar with lots of the players, and it’s great that it’s close to home,” said Tobin. “I’m looking forward to becoming a part of the team and getting to know the girls I played against in my years in the Manitoba Female Hockey League (MFHL).”

Cougars Hockey Head Coach Tony Bertone was impressed with the hardworking forward over this past season.

“Katrina is a forward that when I watched her play, checks all the boxes on the old saying forecheck-backcheck-paycheck,” said Bertone. “She gives 100% every shift, feet are always moving and has a very good understanding of the game. She is the type of athlete that can make that hard pass across the zone and on the tape.”

Tobin was named MFMHL player of the week in the 2018-19 season, and in the same year, she clinched a gold medal in the Thompson Manitoba games.

“I believe I will be an asset to the team, as I work hard, play smart and have good puck movement. I’m a positive and like to motivate others,” expressed Tobin.

Katrina has been accepted in the Legal Administration program at Assiniboine Community College for the 2020-21 academic year.
