Cougars Weekend Re-Cap: Futsal teams finish out season

The Cougars futsal teams were back in action this weekend with the last of their regular season play in the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference. The women's hockey team played an exhibition game against Polar Ice in Oak Bluff, MB on Saturday, March 3 at 1:45 p.m. in their preparation for nationals.

The Cougars futsal teams were back in action this weekend with the last of their regular season play in the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference. They were in Winnipeg Saturday March. 3 to first take on the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers followed by play out in Otterburne, MB against the Providence University College Pilots. The women's hockey team played an exhibition game against Polar Ice in Oak Bluff, MB on Saturday, March 3 at 1:45 p.m. in their preparation for nationals.

The Men’s futsal team started the day, playing the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers men’s team at 11 a.m. Despite Mario Urias having a hat-trick, the Blazers went on to win 9-3.

The women’s match followed at 12:30 p.m. The score after the first half was 2-0 for the Blazers. Tatiana Lopez Beltran scored a goal in the second half, for the Cougars, but it was the only goal the team managed. The Blazers won the match, 11-1.

At Providence University College the men's game got underway at 4 p.m. This was the men’s final match-up, of the season. Mario Urias scored another goal, but it wasn’t enough, as the Providence University College Pilots won by a score of 4-1.

The women’s match got rolling at 5:30 p.m. Erin Doherty scored the Cougars only goal of the contest, but the final score was 8-1 for Providence.

The puck dropped at 1:45 p.m Saturday afternoon for the women's hockey game. The Cougars were unable to find the back of the net against Polar Ice, who skated to a 1-0 victory. Brooklyn Elek and Miranda Cook shared the net, but Cook was given the loss.

Next weekend Assiniboine Community College will host the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference Futsal Championship weekend. Semi-finals will take place Saturday March 10 with the men’s semi-finals at 12 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. The women’s semi-finals will be held at 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. The finals will be held on Sunday, March 11 at 1 p.m. (Men’s Final) and 3 p.m. (Women’s Final).

The Cougars women’s hockey team has been ranked third in the West of the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division II, qualifying them for nationals in Columbus, Ohio. Nationals will take place March 14-18, 2018. The teams' first game of nationals will be against North Dakota State University, March 14 at 7:15 p.m.
