Cougars Weekend Re-Cap: Futsal teams open MCAC Season

The Cougars were busy at home and on the road this weekend. The men’s and women's volleyball teams hosted the Providence University Pilots Friday night and Saturday afternoon, while the men’s and women's futsal teams opened their Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference season on the road in Winnipeg on Saturday.

The men’s and women's volleyball teams hosted the Providence University Pilots Friday night and Saturday afternoon, while the men’s and women's futsal teams opened their Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference season on the road in Winnipeg on Saturday. They played Université de Saint-Boniface Les Rouges, followed by the Red River College Rebels.

Friday, January 19 the men’s match started at 6 p.m. against the Pilots. The Cougars dropped three straight sets (17-25, 13-25, and 12-25) to the Pilots. Braden Campbell managed 6 kills, while Austin Chandler chimed in 4 kills.

The woman's match had a similar story with the Pilots winning in three sets (25-14, 25-12, and 25-18). Erica Scott had 10 kills, while Jordyn Paddock contributed 4 kills, and Jessi Coulter and Brittany Krahn each had 3 kills.

Saturday, January 20 the Cougars took another crack at the Pilots with the men playing at 12 noon and the women at 1:30 p.m. The men’s team battled through the first set, but ultimately fell 20-25 to the Pilots. Pilots won three straight sets for the win (25-20, 25-18, and 25-11). Braden Campbell had 5 kills, while Austin Chandler, Matt Waites, and Evan Walker chimed in 2 kills each. Leo McArthur contributed 2 blocks.

The women had an exciting first set with the Cougars leading throughout, however the Pilots pulled from behind and won 25-22. Second set was 25-19 for the Pilots and they went on to win the third set 25-22 for the game. Erica Scott had 10 kills and Jordyn Paddock chipped in 6 kills and 13 digs.

The men’s futsal team had their first match of the season against the Université de Saint-Boniface Les Rouges at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 20. Les Rouges were leading 9-3 at the half, however they had a fury of offense in the second half and ultimately won 19-5. Rookie, Theo Bosc scored twice, while Graeme Wilson, Fernando Castro, and Mario Urias each chipped in a goal for the Cougars.

The women’s futsal team followed against Les Rouges at 12:30 p.m. Les Rouges were up 4-1 at the half, and finished with an 8-2 win. Jasmine Preteau and Tatiana Lopez-Beltran scored for the Cougars

The futsal teams headed across the city to then take on the Red River College Rebels with the men’s game at 3 p.m. and the women at 4:30 p.m. The men’s match ended up 5-2 in favour of the Rebels. Graeme Wilson and Diego Gutierrez both scored goal sfor the Cougars. The women fell 9-0 to the Rebels.

Cougars are back at it next weekend with the volleyball teams taking on the Canadian Mennonite University Blazers Friday, January 26 and Saturday, January 27. The men’s match is at 6 p.m. on the 26th followed by the women at 7:30 p.m. On the 27th the men play at 12 noon and the women at 1:30 p.m. The games will be held at Assiniboine Community College, Friday and Saturday.

The futsal teams head across town to the Brandon University Healthy Living Center to take on the Bobcats, Friday, January 26 with the men playing at 6 p.m. and the women at 7:30 p.m.
