ESL evening and weekend classes available

Assiniboine Community College has announced new tuition-free evening and weekend English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) 5/6 and 7/8 starting June 8, 2020.

These classes come in addition to existing daytime options offered by Assiniboine. The new class times and additional seats allow for greater accessibility to ESL programs for newcomers who want to improve their English language skills.

“ESL classes are an incredibly important part of welcoming new Canadians, helping them to gain the necessary language skills for jobs and pathways into post-secondary programs,” said Assiniboine president Mark Frison. “We are pleased to see the Government of Canada’s support to offer more classes in the community.”

Amid the current COVID-19 pandemic, Assiniboine has adapted to a digital environment to ensure students can continue their education while practicing social distancing precautions outlined by public health. While ESL classes have traditionally been delivered face-to-face on campus, students have shifted to an online format.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada provides funding for Assiniboine’s ESL programming which has increased by 18% per cent this year, and resulted in an additional 120 part-time, evening and weekend seats for the upcoming semester.

To participate in an ESL class student are required to have completed CLB level 4 or higher in listening, speaking, reading and writing, and have a permanent resident status or refugee status.
