Looking to go from shutterbug to lens leader? We have short workshops and extensive photography courses that will put you on a roll!

Throughout this fall, you have many options to improve your picture-taking skills, whether you're looking to improve your holiday portraits, share better selfies, take classy product shots, or pursue professional post-processing.

You'll find evening and weekend courses in Brandon, Dauphin, Russell and Gimli over the next few months, with more coming this winter. Here's a sample:

BRANDON

BEGINNERS PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

This course is designed for people who are beginners with a single-lens reflex camera. Your SLR camera must have interchangeable lenses or have settings you can change to manual mode. The course covers camera controls, how to get the proper exposure, auto focus, lenses, composition, filters, special effects, closeup photography, matting and flash.
• This course welcomes 35 mm film cameras as well as digital cameras

SMARTPHONE PHOTOGRAPHY

Discover how to capture the best possible images using your smartphone. Learn about the basics of framing, lighting and holding your phone to make the best use of the small lens. Find specific apps for shooting, editing and sharing your photos. Some of the apps discussed in class may be purchased online for a small fee, but they are not required. Class will include a practical component with instructor feedback. Whether you just like to snap pictures with your phone or you’re ready to leave your bulky camera at home, our experienced photographer will teach you to take great photos on-the-go!

PHOTOSHOP 1

Snapping a photo is just the start! Learn basic ways to manipulate your images and how to print great prints using Adobe Photoshop and your imagination. You will learn about resolution, file formats, how to adjust levels, resize images, include text and many exciting and fun ways to enhance your images. Make prints to take home of your work in class (a small charge to cover ink and photo paper costs may be paid to the instructors at the end of each class). Bring your own pictures on a jump (flash) drive, camera memory card or CD. In order to take your pictures home, please bring a jump (flash) drive.
• This course is held at Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School; enter through the north doors on the west side.

Now you can build on what you learned in Photoshop 1. Learn how to work with RAW files, how to write and use Actions to streamline your workflow, how to simulate the infrared effect, and other fun things. You’ll also make an impressionist photo using the art history brush plus try many other exciting new techniques to make your pictures stand out. Bring your own pictures to work on each week. Make sure you have some scenic photos for the first week. In order to take your picture files home, please bring a jump (flash) drive. Make prints to take home of your work in class (a small charge to cover ink and photo paper costs may be paid to the instructors at the end of each class).
