King and Vanmackelbergh Return to Cougar Volleyball

Victoria King and Skyla Vanmackelbergh have taken some time away from volleyball to coach and work but are ready to return to the play for the Cougars next season

The Assiniboine Cougars women’s volleyball team will see the return of two strong competitors in Victoria King and Skyla Vanmackelbergh.

King is a 6’2 right side from Brandon, Manitoba. King played volleyball for the Cougars in 2016-17 while taking the college’s Social Service Worker program. Prior to that she played for the Elton Collegiate and the Winman Volleyball Club. She was named a graduating All-Star in 2014 before spending one season at the University of Mary playing for the Marauders in 2014-15.

“I’m excited to play volleyball again while continuing my education and pursuing a career I want,” said King.

“I am looking forward to having Victoria join our program again. She has been coaching club volleyball at the 18U level and I feel this has given her a better understanding of the game from a different prospective,” said head coach Jeff Maxwell. “I believe her volleyball and life experience is going to be a huge asset to our young team.”

Vanmackelbergh is a six foot, left side from Deloraine, Manitoba. She took one year of Business Administration at the college and played for the Cougars in 2017-18. She played volleyball throughout high school at Deloraine Collegiate as well as for Club West, Big Bear and Cats club volleyball teams. She was named an all-star in grade eleven when her high school team won a bronze medal at provincials and was named a 2017 graduating all-star.

“I love the competitive nature of volleyball and am excited to play with the Cougars again,” says Vanmackelbergh. “I am a little nervous about not having played for a year but I think it will go well and it will all come back quickly.”

“Skyla also spent time over the past year coaching the Deloraine varsity girls’ volleyball team and I think this is going to give her a new perspective when she steps back on the court this fall,” said coach Maxwell. “Skyla is a dynamic attacker and can make a huge impact on the court.”

King will be taking the college’s Medical Administration program in the fall and Vanmackelbergh will be taking the college’s Early Childhood Education program in the fall.
