Manjumol finds success at ACC

A year ago today, Manjumol Abraham was preparing to leave her home in Kerala, India, and fly more than 13,000 km to Dauphin to come to ACC.

Now, with two awards and a new job, Abraham credits her Assiniboine Community College education for a “wonderful experience” and a new opportunity in Canada.

Abraham graduated last month from the Comprehensive Health Care Aide program at ACC’s Parkland campus in Dauphin and she says that her ultimate goal is to go on to become a registered nurse here.

“Back home, I was a nurse,” Abraham said. But last July she decided to take advantage of the opportunity to study in Canada, and to become a permanent resident.

She actually arrived July 14 last year – a couple of days after the start of classes. She managed to catch up quickly.

“I had a wonderful experience at ACC,” she said. “It was a great opportunity for me and my instructors were friendly and supportive.”

After completing the certificate program, Abraham earned two student awards during her graduation ceremony.

She took home the MEDIchair Dauphin Award for academic excellence in patient/care courses and the St Paul’s Home Auxiliary Award for general academic excellent and team spirit.

Modestly, she said she was “very happy and thankful” to receive the awards.

Now, Abraham is working full-time at the Swan Valley Lodge in Swan River.

“I am very glad to say that people are very nice here and I like it here,” she said. “It is a different culture from my country, but I love it.”

Out of the 15 students in her CHCA class, Abraham said that five were international students, studying alongside the 10 Canadian students. Four of the international students were from Korea, while she had come from India.

The Comprehensive Health Care Aide program is one of ACC’s more popular programs. A recent survey of grads found that 100 per cent of them would recommend it.
