After a never before experienced season like the 2020-21 season, the Assiniboine Cougars have their sights set on a strong start for the 2021-22 season. The Cougars Hockey program is excited to announce the signing of Goaltender, Geneva Penner.

Geneva Penner, from Mitchell, Manitoba spent the last season as a member of the Eastman U18 Female Selects team in the Manitoba AAA Female Midget Hockey League (MFMHL). Penner currently attends Steinbach Regional High School and attributes her family for fueling her passion and drive to pursue hockey.

“My family introduced me to hockey at a young age, it was their love of the game that started my passion,” said Penner. “Once I began playing, I loved it. I am so thankful for the opportunities the game has given and continue to give me.”

Previous athlete experiences were a big draw for Penner when it came down to making a final decision on the Cougars program.

“Athletes who attended ACC have spoken very highly of the school and team, I am beyond excited to join the program” said Penner.

Cougars Hockey Head Coach Tony Bertone was convinced that Penner was the goaltender the program needed.

“We are pleased to welcome Geneva to our program, she brings a strong work ethic and competitiveness to win,” said Bertone. “We feel she is one of the top goaltenders in U18.”

Penner was selected for the top 100 in 2019 for the U18 Manitoba Games with having previously played in the Manitoba Winter Games in 2018.

“Throughout high school I have taken multiple business courses and have always enjoyed and excelled in them. I am excited to continue to study business and obtain my diploma” said Penner.

Geneva has been accepted in the Business Administration program at Assiniboine Community College for the 2021-22 academic year.
