Program Spotlight: Adult Learning & Upgrading at Assiniboine

At Assiniboine, our entire raison d’être, or reason for being, is adult education. It’s what we live and breathe every single day.

We understand there are many pathways in life that may have led you away from completing Grade 12, or perhaps not choosing the “right” science to get you into a college program, or maybe not getting the grades you needed the first time around.

No matter the path you have been walking, know that we’re ready to welcome you when you wish to take a step in a different direction. Assiniboine’s Centre for Adult Learning offers courses to help you finish your high school diploma, complete prerequisites for post-secondary or increase your previous high school marks.

If you’re 19 years of age or older and have been out of high school for at least six months, you may qualify for our Mature Student High School program and can begin working towards your high school diploma. If you’re already a high school graduate, but are seeking additional credits or would like to upgrade courses, you may take up to four additional high school courses tuition-free.

Assiniboine has small class sizes, focused one-on-one instructor attention, and day or evening classes to fit your schedule. We pride ourselves on our supportive environment—our student success advisor will work with you to map out your education and career goals. You will also have access to a learning strategist, Indigenous services officer, Elders, and tutors to support you while enrolled.

There are also two integrated programs, should you wish to complete your high school diploma while also taking a college-level program. Available programs include Education Assistant and Comprehensive Health Care Aide.

The college has two centres. One is located at our Parkland campus in Dauphin; the other is located at our Victoria Avenue East campus in Brandon. The newly opened space in Brandon is in the heart of our largest campus; it features large, airy workspaces for collaboration and learning, and its central location ensures you have access to all campus amenities such as the library, fitness centre and cafeteria.

More career opportunities are available to people who receive a high school diploma and obtaining prerequisites for post-secondary opens new windows of possibility for training and employment. When the time comes for a change, Assiniboine is here.

Classes begin in September and January each year, and we have both daytime and evening options. You can complete your high school diploma tuition-free—and there is no application fee!
