Media and Communications

Are you always asking questions? Do you enjoy telling stories in unique and creative ways? Rather than learning theory, would you like to be out of a standard classroom and putting together content for others? Assiniboine’s two-year Media and Communications diploma is the program for you!

This program gives you the opportunity to excel in a hands-on career in television, radio or film. Learn all facets of the industry and then specialize in what you like best. Our experienced instructors push you to develop your narrative craft, tackle news reporting, and master technical skills.

A broad term, media and communications is used to describe sectors such as film, television, journalism, radio, music, advertising, digital media, and much more. At its heart though, it’s an art form in its own right. You might not be putting paint to canvas or sculpting clay with your hands, but media and communications is artistic expression. You get to tell the story you want to tell, in the way you want to tell it. Make content you—and others—care about.

Write a story from start to finish, but have the ability to put it into a range of audio and visual formats, including podcasts, documentaries and broadcasts. Develop your passion for television or radio, and hone your craft across a wide range of audiovisual environments. Learn to write, announce, shoot, record, edit, and produce.

Whether you’re in front of the camera or behind it, the voice over the radio or the one pushing production buttons, media and communications allows you to be front and centre or in the background—the choice is yours. Bursting with hard and soft skill development, this program will help you become communication savvy, bolstering your oral, written and collaboration skillsets, as well as your analytical and critical thinking.

Every assignment connects you to our broader communities and gives you hands-on opportunities to try new things. During your Capstone project, choose an area of interest and be mentored by a field specialist. Today’s career opportunities for communication grads are more widereaching than ever—and well-paying. Get into a multitude of industries that need good writers, technical specialists, and passionate, well-spoken team members.

Creativity is the bedrock of media and communications. Creative professionals embrace a varied project portfolio, make a lot of their own decisions, and find many opportunities to take initiative and influence the organizations they work for. Challenge yourself with a career that means you’ll never have the same day twice.
