School of Business announce One to Watch Award winners
June 18, 2020
Assiniboine Community College has announced the School of Business 2020 One to Watch award recipients.
"Graduates from the School of Business are equipped with the skills and knowledge to add value to Westman businesses, or create their own start-up business," Bobbie Robertson, Dean of Business at Assiniboine. "We are pleased to recognize and celebrate our One to Watch award recipients who have performed exceedingly well during their time at Assiniboine."
Fifteen students received One to Watch awards within the School of Business which offers Certificate, Diploma, and Advanced Diploma programs in office administration, interactive media arts, business and network administration technology. For Kailan Dreolini, a graduate of the Business Administration—Human Management Resource program, receiving the award is the cherry on top for her return to the classroom as a mature student.
"To be recognized for all the work and dedication I put into the program means so much. I had been out of the classroom for a few years and was quite nervous about returning, so it's extremely rewarding to be recognized for that effort," said Kailan Dreolini.
Kailan said she was attracted to the program because of the diverse specializations available and the approachable structure of the courses.
"I chose the Business Administration program because I knew I wanted a career in business, but was unsure of what I wanted to do exactly. I knew the program at Assiniboine had many different specialities, and I felt confident that when I finished my first year of studies, I would have a better sense of what career I wanted to pursue,” she said.
The business administration program provides graduates with a strong foundation in business knowledge and allows them to in either Accounting, Financial Services, Human Resource Management or Marketing roles upon graduation.
“I chose to specialize in Human Resource Management because I enjoy working with people. I took many courses that were related to Management because I am interested in possibly starting my own business in the future. The program I chose was perfect for helping me prepare for either of those endeavours," said Kailan.
"What I enjoyed most about my journey at Assiniboine was how every instructor incorporated real-life scenarios into their teachings. I learned how to write job descriptions, make business and marketing plans, screen resumes, create job ads, and how to be the most effective leader. Every class I took taught me something I know I will use as an employee one day and not just as a student," Kailan said.
In prior years, One to Watch awards have been presented in-person at the Student Achievement Celebration dinner. However, with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this year's event was cancelled.
