Top Reasons People Use the Library

It’s true. People use the Assiniboine library for a lot of other things other than signing out books. Now, of course, you can use the library to do just that—we have a ton of books, a great big room full of books in fact, that are yours for the taking. And not all of these pressed pages are academic-related, either. We house pretty decent fiction and non-fiction sections for personal reading, as well as a large kids’ section.
But, if you’re looking for how the library can support you during your studies at Assiniboine outside of signing out books, then check out (pun definitely intended) these five ways our friendly library staff can help you out!

  • Study space
  • Research help
  • Citing help
  • Information Literacy help
  • Interlibrary loans

Study Space

Need a space to study? The library offers lots of study space areas for different needs:

  • Single-person study carrels with plugins galore for all of your devices.
  • Individual computer workstations so you can work to your heart’s content on that upcoming paper or project.
  • Group study space, including bookable group study rooms, to allow the creativity and brainstorming to flow—without disturbing your fellow neighbours.

Research Help

Don’t know where to start your research for an assignment? Having trouble finding relevant information? Do. Not. Panic. The library staff can introduce you to quality information sources and the search techniques to navigate them! Stop by the library for help in-person or fill out the help request form.

Citing Help

Unfamiliar with citing sources? Worried about accidentally plagiarizing? Are the rules of APA citation sounding like Greek, and you’re convinced it was designed to take your last shred of sanity? The library staff can help! We’ll show you where to locate the elements you need to create your references and tools to do it efficiently. Stop by the library for help in-person or fill out our help request form.

Information Literacy Help

Having trouble determining the credibility of a source of information? Not sure if the information you found is relevant? Are you worried that the author of the article you’re reading might just be some rando whose only claim to being a subject matter expert is the amount of screen time he’s dedicated to watching documentaries? The library staff can guide you in developing skills that will help you judge the credibility, authority and relevance of information sources! Stop by the library for help in-person or fill out our help request form.

Interlibrary Loans

Unable to get full text access to a journal article? Need a book that we don’t have in our collection? We might be small, but we are MIGHTY! Through a service called interlibrary loan, the library can bring in articles and books from other libraries with no charge to you. To request an interlibrary loan through us, simply fill out the library materials request form, and we’ll do our best to get the item in for you.
