Twenty-four students to graduate from Assiniboine’s Adult Collegiate

Twenty-four students from Assiniboine Community College’s Adult Collegiate will receive their high school diplomas at a ceremony tomorrow afternoon. The graduation ceremony takes place at 1:30 p.m. in the gymnasium of the college’s Victoria Avenue East Campus in Brandon.

“Graduation day is always very exciting for the Adult Collegiate. It is wonderful to see the culmination of all the hard work and determination on the part of the students and the pride they have in their accomplishments,” said Kate Pelletier, Dean, Trades, Technology and Access Programs, which includes responsibility for the Adult Collegiate.

This year’s valedictorian, Dave Redekopp, says anyone thinking of returning to high school or pursuing a college diploma should “Just do it! Fear of the unknown is what holds us back from attaining our goals. The cure to this fear is education. Education is the key that will unlock the doors to your end goal.”

Four students will graduate with honours, meaning they have achieved a cumulative average of at least 80 per cent in their coursework.

Two students will graduate with a Comprehensive Health Care Aide certificate (post-secondary) using dual credits to gain both the Mature Student High School (MSHS) diploma and the CHCA certificate.

Three entrance scholarships will be presented to graduates continuing their post-secondary education at Assiniboine. Other scholarship awards include one from Westman Communications and two from the Assiniboine Community College Students’ Association.

This was the second year of a two-year trial period in which the application fee for the Mature Student High School program was waived, thanks to support from the Assiniboine Community College Foundation.

Earlier this month, Assiniboine held its annual graduation ceremonies in Brandon and Dauphin with more than 1,400 graduating students receiving diplomas, certificates and completing apprenticeship levels.
