Young leaders showcase their creativity on campus

Lights, camera, action! Students in Brandon's first After School Leaders program shared their work with family, friends and the community at a showcase event on Thursday evening on campus.

This After School Leaders (ASL) program, Making a Web Series: Filmmaking for the Digital Age, offered high school students ages 14 to 18 the opportunity to explore career options and their potential and passion within the areas of art and technology.

The program began in October 2015, welcoming students to campus on Tuesday and Thursdays for 14 weeks. Yesterday's showcase event was a culmination of the work students created throughout the length of the program.

The program provided a true ‘learn by doing’ experience where students produced fully finished episodes for an ongoing web series. Students learned aspects the digital filmmaking process, including pre-production, production, and post-production skills and techniques. They worked side by side with industry professionals and were mentored in a risk-free, safe learning environment.

The Manitoba government launched its first After School Leaders program in 2012. Since then, ASL programs have offered students ages 14 to 18 in inner-city high schools in Winnipeg the opportunity to explore career options and identify their passion and potential in the areas of arts, science, technology, sports and communication. This is the first ASL program held in Brandon.
