Challenge Details & Contest Rules

Who is the IMAgine Video and Audio Challenge for?

Do you like filming, creating videos, hosting podcasts, producing music videos, making motion graphics and above all telling stories? Are you thinking about in enrolling in Assiniboine Community College’s Interactive Media Arts program? Then the IMAgine Video and Audio Challenge is for you! We are looking for those who have a passion for storytelling using video and audio.

What is a Video and Audio Challenge?

It’s a way to have your creativity and work recognized! Very much like a film festival, participants enter their video and audio content which will be judged to choose the winner of each category.

What are the categories for entry?

There are four contest areas:

  1. Short Film Factual - Examples of work that can be submitted include documentary, sports, lifestyle, arts and entertainment.
  2. Short Film Scripted - Examples of work that can be submitted include drama, comedy and music videos.
  3. Audio Production - Examples of work that can be submitted include podcasts radio shows, audio dramas, music recordings
  4. Multimedia - Examples of work that can be submitted include motion graphics, 3D & 2D graphics, game development.
Can I enter multiple times?

Only one entry per contest year is allowed. Your first entry will be the only one reviewed and considered.

Are there any minimum or maximum lengths for the entries?

No, we suggest you think quality over quantity. A polished one-minute submission will do better than an error-filled three-minute entry.

What are the prizes?

Everyone who enters and meets the submission requirements will receive a $500 award towards their first-year tuition of the Interactive Media Arts Program at Assiniboine. If your entry wins first place in a category then you will instead receive a $1,000 award to the first-year tuition of the Interactive Media Arts Program at Assiniboine.

Is there a minimum age to apply?

There is no minimum or maximum age to apply, however, the tuition awards for participants and winners must be used within three years from the date it’s received. So, if you’re a grade 9 student, you wouldn’t be eligible for the Interactive Media Arts by that time.

Can I work with a friend?

You bet! We’ll take submissions from individuals or groups of two. Both group members will each receive a $500 entry award. If your film wins in a category, you will both receive the $1,000 entry award.

What if I’ve never made a film before?

This is a great opportunity to try something new. We welcome entries from individuals at all skill levels. If you have a passion and an interest in filmmaking, then we think you should give it a go!

How do I submit my entry?

Fill out the online form and send us a YouTube, Vimeo or Soundcloud link to your submission. It’s that easy!

How do I know if you received my entry?

We’ll be in touch informing you that your entry has been received if it meets the requirements, and how you can redeem your participation award.

How do I know if my entry has won?

If your entry is judged to be the winner of its category we will be in touch shortly after the contest deadline to congratulate you. You will hear from us before June 30, 2020.

What is the contest deadline?

This year, the submission deadline is May 4, 2020. Late submissions may be considered, but you should check with us first if you’re not sure you can meet the deadline.

Can I use the award towards another program at Assiniboine Community College?

The award is only eligible for the Interactive Media Arts program (either specialization) at Assiniboine Community College.

If I decide not to enrol in the program, can I just have a cash award?

No, the awards are only applicable towards the tuition of the Interactive Media Arts program (Web or Interactive) at Assiniboine and must be used within three years of receiving the award.

Can my tuition award be given to someone else who’s planning to enrol?

Nope, sorry, as nice as that gesture may be, the award money is non-transferable to another person and has no cash value.

I entered this contest last year and received a $500 award towards my tuition. Can I submit an entry again this year?

You are welcome to submit another entry; however, you will only be allowed to claim one award towards your first-year tuition in the IMA program at Assiniboine. For example, if you entered last year and received $500 and then entered again this year and won $1,000 only the $1,000 would be eligible.

I have some more questions that I can’t find the answers to here, who can I contact?

You can contact the challenge organizer and Interactive Media Arts instructor, Graham Street, at streetg@assiniboine.net. He’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have!

Judges reserve the right to disqualify entries that do not meet the minimum entrance requirements. Assiniboine Community College reserves the right to end the contest early.
