Our program offers a supportive and inclusive learning environment tailored to meet your needs as an adult learner. Flexible class schedules and three different learning options to choose from—including in person, independent study or online—make it easier for you to balance your education with other commitments. Best of all, the Mature Student High School Program is low-cost, making your educational goals more accessible and achievable.

If in-person classes don't fit your needs, choose to learn online (hub mode) from the comfort of your own home or another campus, or through independent study (distance).

With the independent study option, you can register any time, working at your own pace to complete courses within 12 months. In-person and hub mode classes begin every September and January; terms offer both day and evening courses. Assiniboine has two physical campus locations to serve you:

  • Adult Learning Centre - Brandon is located at our Victoria Avenue East campus
  • Adult Learning Centre - Parkland is located in Dauphin at our Parkland campus

Courses & Costs

Costs

High school courses are tuition-free, allowing students to earn their high school diploma without the financial barrier of tuition fees. The cost per course varies based on credits and study options. Students are responsible for Students’ Association and material fees.

While each course does have fees associated with it, students are not responsible for textbooks; there may also be additional tools and supplies needed as well. CAL works hard to keep the fees as low as possible so that as many people as possible can learn with us.

Courses

To graduate within the regular high school system in Manitoba, students must earn 30 credits (17 compulsory and 13 optional/elective). By enrolling in Assiniboine’s Mature Student High School at the Centre for Adult Learning, students must have eight credits: four of which must be at the Grade 12 level, with mandatory credits in Grade 12 English Language Arts and Grade 12 Mathematics.

Many students do not need to complete all eight credits. Depending on what prior credits students have already earned when they enrol, they may only need one or two credits through CAL to graduate. For many, Assiniboine’s MSHS can be the fastest route to achieve a high school diploma.

Schedule

The Centre for Adult Learning has two intakes for in-person and hub mode (online) classes: September and January. Courses are offered during weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Independent study (distance) intakes happen monthly. Read more about Study Options in the tab above.

Study Options

CAL offers students three different ways to take classes. You decide which study option is right for you.

In-person classes

In-person means attending your classes on campus, where you will be able to work directly with instructors and peers. This option offers hands-on learning, real-time discussions, and access to campus resources.

Hub Mode (Online)

In hub mode, classes are taught in-person at a CAL location and streamed live to students who can join class from another site or from home. For example, an in-person class may be hosted at Victoria Avenue East campus in Brandon, but students living in Winnipeg may join from the convenience of their home. These students join the class using Zoom or Microsoft Teams. They can take part in class discussions and activities just like students in the room. Instructors can be reached by phone, email, through the online learning system (LMS), or in person by appointment.

Independent Study (Continuous Registration)

The Independent study (distance) option lets students work on their own, at their own pace. There are no regular classes to attend, and most learning happens through written instructions. Students turn in their work by mail, email, the online learning system (LMS), or in person. This option is very flexible, but students are required to set a schedule for checking in and getting help when needed.

Independent study courses follow a set registration schedule. Students can start at any time during the registration period. Once they are enrolled, they have up to 12 months to complete the course.
