Are you an adult looking to return to school and complete your high school diploma? At Assiniboine’s Centre for Adult Learning (CAL), we know that going back to school takes courage and determination—but it’s a decision that can transform your future. Whether you want to pursue new career opportunities, qualify for post-secondary programs, or simply achieve a long-held personal goal, our Mature Student High School (MSHS) program is designed for learners like you.

A Faster Path to Graduation
Many adult learners don’t realize that graduating with a Grade 12 diploma as a mature student is different than the traditional high school route. In Manitoba, adults don’t need to complete all 30 high school credits that younger students do. Instead, you need just eight credits at the high school level, and two of those must be Grade 12 Math and Grade 12 English.

For many mature learners, this means you already have most of the required credits from your earlier schooling. With the help of CAL advisors, we’ll review your transcript, show you exactly what you’re missing, and help you create a personalized plan. Often, you only need to complete a few courses to cross the finish line—making the MSHS program a quicker, more practical way to achieve your diploma.

A Supportive, Flexible Learning Environment
CAL provides a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere where adult learners can thrive. We understand that balancing education with work, family and other commitments isn’t easy, which is why we’ve built flexibility into everything we offer. With three different learning options—in-person classes, hub mode (online from home or another campus), or independent study (distance)—you can choose the path that best suits your lifestyle.

Independent study allows you to register anytime and work at your own pace, with up to 12 months to complete each course. For in-person and hub mode options, new terms start every September and January, with both day and evening classes available. Best of all, the Mature Student High School program is tuition-free, making your goals more accessible and achievable. Each course does have fees associated with it, and although students are not responsible for textbooks, there will be additional tools and supplies needed as well, such as paper, pens and calculators. CAL works hard to keep the fees as low as possible so that as many people as possible can learn with us.

Two Convenient Locations
Assiniboine operates two Centres for Adult Learning: one in Brandon at our Victoria Avenue East campus, and one in Dauphin at our Parkland campus. If you choose to learn on-campus or visit us to connect to online classes, both locations provide spaces for learning and connection, with classrooms, computer labs, study areas, and complimentary wireless internet.

Integrated Programs: Two Achievements in One
For students ready to take things further, CAL offers integrated programs where you can earn both your high school diploma and a college-level certificate at the same time. Thanks to dual credits, some of the courses you complete in your college program also count toward your high school diploma. Students need to have completed Grade 12 Math and English before entering, but this pathway is an excellent way to become job-ready while finishing high school.

Student Advising and Comprehensive Supports
At CAL, you won’t be navigating this journey alone. Each learner has access to a dedicated student success advisor who can help you map out your education and career goals. Additional supports include a learning strategist, Indigenous services officer, tutors, and elders who can provide guidance and encouragement. From day one to graduation, our team is here to walk alongside you.

Take the Next Step
Returning to high school as an adult is more than just finishing courses—it’s about proving to yourself that you can succeed, setting an example for your children or community, and opening doors to new possibilities. At Assiniboine’s Centre for Adult Learning, we believe it’s never too late to elevate your future.
