November 18, 2025
Assiniboine College is launching a new Food Services Management diploma program, beginning in September 2026 to prepare students for leadership roles in large-scale institutional food service settings, like hospitals, schools and correctional facilities.
“This program is a game-changer for the food services industry,” said Karen O’Gilvie, Chairperson of the Manitoba Institute of Culinary Arts. “We’ve built a curriculum that blends leadership, legislation, and logistics with a deep commitment to client care and satisfaction. Our graduates will be equipped to manage complex food systems in a variety of settings with confidence and compassion.”
The program blends operational planning, regulatory knowledge, and client-focused service delivery with a strong emphasis on leadership development. Students will graduate equipped with the skills and confidence to manage complex operations and lead teams in a growing essential industry.
“Assiniboine is committed to developing programs that respond to real-world needs,” said Dr. Deanna Rexe, Vice President Academic. “This new offering reflects our dedication to applied learning and workforce readiness. Students will graduate with the skills and knowledge to lead in high-demand sectors and make meaningful contributions to their communities.”
Students will learn to design and implement menus that meet diverse dietary and cultural needs, manage staff and budgets, ensure compliance with food safety legislation, and deliver high-quality service that aligns with organizational goals. The program also focuses on cultivating leadership competencies, such as strategic thinking, team building, and ethical decision-making, all of which are essential for success in today’s service-driven environments.
“Assiniboine’s new program is a direct investment in student success,” said Renée Cable, Minister of Advanced Education and Training. “Graduates will leave with the practical skills and leadership training needed to step confidently into high-demand roles. This kind of targeted education ensures students are not just job-ready—they’re career-ready.”
