Important Update: Former student email services are discontinued as of October 2026
July 17, 2026
Starting this October, Assiniboine College will begin discontinuing alumni and former student email and login account services. For a former student (both graduates and those who stopped their studies), this means that two years after completing their last course, their account will be closed.
This approach is part of continuously improving our cyber security posture and minimizing risks while balancing service. In recent years, many colleges and universities have made similar moves.
In the coming weeks, ITS will be distributing emails to current and past students at their @assiniboine.net emails to let them know about this change and how and when it will impact them. Alumni will be encouraged to update their contact information with the Advancement Office to a personal email address and other contact information.
Future students will be notified at the time of their account creation (claim ID) that their account will be discontinued two years after their last course.
Why are alumni email and accounts being discontinued
Over the past 35 years, email has changed dramatically and so have the ways people use it. Assiniboine is ending its alumni and former student accounts to improve cybersecurity, protect personal data, and manage rising costs. Most alumni now prefer free email services like Gmail or Outlook, or Apple Mail, and usage of email accounts for past students has steadily declined.
Why is this change happening?
- Rising costs and responsible budgeting: Each year, Assiniboine graduates thousands of students, adding thousands of accounts to maintain. Licensing models can now require a fee-per-user, significantly increasing costs beyond available budgets.
- Low usage: Use of accounts has been declining, and many alumni accounts remain inactive for months or years, while free alternatives like Gmail, Yahoo, and Apple Mail are widely used. Most alumni now prefer free email services like Gmail or Apple Mail, and usage of alumni email accounts has steadily declined.
- Security: Reputation and cybersecurity risks are increasing every year, and unused/unmonitored accounts are at higher risk for threats. Discontinuing alumni emails helps us better protect personal and institutional data.
- Evolving technology: Email services have changed dramatically since alumni accounts were first offered, and we must adapt to ensure security and sustainability.
Discontinuing email accounts will help us better protect personal and institutional data as cybersecurity threats and phishing attacks are increasing. In recent years, some licensing models have also changed to a fee-per-user model, which has exponentially increased costs. With more than 80,000 accounts supported annually at Assiniboine, this shift has made the alumni email program financially and operationally unsustainable. Many other universities and colleges across North America have made similar decisions to discontinue their alumni email services.
Assiniboine’s decision is in line with trends and best practices with peers, signaling a shift toward more secure, cost-effective, and modern digital engagement practices. Moving away from alumni email accounts allows Assiniboine to dedicate resources to engaging with alumni in other ways, in line with their preferences. Additionally, decreasing email accounts reduces energy consumption globally, aligning with our sustainability priority.
FAQs for Current and Former Students
Who does this change affect?
This change will impact all former students – including graduates or those who stopped their studies – two years after their last course.
What are former students losing access to?
Those who have not been in at least one course for two or more years will lose their @assiniboine.net email address and their log-in credentials. This means Connect.Assiniboine (formerly MyACC) will no longer work for you, and any files you have saved on your user account will be deleted.
The College will always retain important information about all former students including final grades, what courses you were registered in, official transcripts, and tax documents; however, you will not be able to log in and access or request these directly from your account.
When is this change happening?
If you have not been enrolled in a course in the past two years, access to your college email and Connect.Assiniboine (formerly MyACC) account will stop October 15, 2026. If you have been studying within the last two years, you will continue to have access to your college email and user account until two academic years since your last course.
Do you have recommendations on what I should save before my account is closed?
Some examples of items you may wish to download include:
Tax Documents (T2202A) – highly recommended (TAX FORMS)
Grades/Unofficial transcripts
Emails or documents saved in your college account
Assignments that you wish to use in a portfolio / resume
** Please note that if you are involved with research on behalf of Assiniboine, you will need to consult your supervisor as intellectual property rights apply **
I use my @assiniboine.net email for other services such as banking, social media, or logins to other sites. What should I do?
You should start documenting where you use your college email and begin switching over to a personal email address immediately. This is much easier to do while you still have access to your college email since you may need to login to the email to verify the change.
What if I miss the deadline to retrieve my data?
For tax forms, you would need to email: [email protected] (please save them before October 15, 2026 via this link: TAX FORMS)
Other official documents, such as official transcripts, can be requested at any time, even after your college account is closed. Use our online Document Request Order Form.
I forgot my password and am unable to login to access my important documents.
Please try the password reset portal, if that fails to work you can contact ITS via email ([email protected]) and we will get back to you Monday-Friday during regular business hours.
I never use my Assiniboine College email and account; do I need to do anything?
No, the account will be closed without any action from you. However, you may wish to ensure that you have important documents such as your tax forms downloaded.
I am a current student, how does impact me?
For now, there is no change or impact to you. Approximately two years after your last course finishes, your Assiniboine account will be fully closed and removed. If you change programs or start a new one, your account will remain active for two years following your last course.
I am about to start my courses or change programs. What does this mean for new students or those returning to their studies soon?
New students or those returning to their studies by September will retain their account for the duration of their studies, and two years after completion or withdrawal the account will be closed and removed.
Can I pay to keep my account open?
No, unfortunately we are unable to offer licenses paid by individuals.
Are there other ways to stay connected as an Alumni?
Yes! Please sign up for the alumni e-newsletter and other important news shared from the Alumni Association. Visit our Alumni page for more information on how to stay connected. Make sure we have your current personal email address, phone, and physical address by checking your user profile in Assiniboine Connect (How to update my address information).
Can I auto-forward email from my @assiniboine.net address to a personal one?
No, forwarding college email to personal email is not available even on active accounts.
